Job Summary:

This position will provide duties with increasing levels of independence to support plant and animal research in the Biotron Laboratory. The Biotron Animal Research (BARS) program is a single housing facility accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Animal Care International (AAALAC). All animal care is provided in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals," and approved research protocols. The Biotron Research Greenhouses include 25 climate controlled greenhouse rooms; four evaporative cooled rooms, 18 specialized controlled environment plant rooms, and associated headhouse including research facilities for use by Biotron investigators.

The incumbent maintains accreditation standards, provides for the physical well-being of research plants and animals and performs tasks involving recordkeeping, cleaning, feeding, watering, room set-up and general care.

Employee will be able to work cooperatively with the Animal Program Manager, Plant Program Manager. The employee participates in educational advancement programs required by employer. The employee is expected to practice health and safety rules and take precautions necessary to maintain animal health in the BARS program and maintain plants and research labs in the Plant Program by following written rules and instructions regarding safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The employee will observe standard operating procedures concerning sanitation, movement of equipment and materials and waste disposal in order to prevent further transfer of infectious biological organisms or contamination with hazardous chemicals.

Driver's License
English Proficiency Required - This position requires one or more of the following abilities: ability to speak, read, write, and/or understand verbal instructions in English

Additional Requirements:

Animal Research Technicians must gain and maintain animal use certification from the UW Research Animal Resource Center (RARC).

American Association for Laboratoy Animals Science (AALAS) Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animals Technologist preferred.

Physical ability to use a ladder, sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist, push carts, use a pallet jack, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Schedule Comment:

Start time flexibility between 8:00am and 9:00am, end time 4:30pm amd 5:30pm, M-F with weekend and holiday work rotation. The schedule for this position requires weekend and holiday hours.
