Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred. A degree is not required for this position. Please refer to the minimum years and relevant work experience section below for more information on position requirements.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

One or more years work experience with Linux, system administration, and IT services is required.

Programming experience in languages such as Perl or Python is required.

Knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas is required: security, storage, networking, web application programming, IT customer service, instructional technology and other IT areas related to providing IT services and support to the Computer Sciences Department.

Position Summary:

The Computer Systems Lab is hiring two staff members to join our team to support the IT needs of the Computer Sciences Department. Staff are responsible for one or more projects or services as the technical lead, while working with other team members in support of other projects and services for the Department. Specific tasks will vary depending on skills, experience and current project needs.

The Computer Systems Lab operates and maintains the IT facilities and supports all IT activities of the Computer Sciences Department at UW-Madison. Our team of six full-time staff and 10-12 part-time student staff work together to meet the needs of a world class Computer Sciences department.

The CSL infrastructure is mostly Linux based, with some Windows servers. Our current Linux environment is a mix of CentOS and Ubuntu Linux. Additional activities include network management, storage, security, IT purchasing, database systems and applications, web servers and applications, and cloud services.

Participation in UW campus organizations is also encouraged. Information technology development and support expertise is spread throughout the campus. Cooperative efforts and relationships are strongly encouraged.
