Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor of Science degree in the life sciences, industrial hygiene, environmental health, or related field. MS preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Experience with specialized containment systems (e.g. HVAC) employed in biocontainment research laboratories and animal facilities is valuable. Specifically, relevant work experience includes:
Knowledge of basic principles of laboratory safety and chemical hazards required.
Good understanding of the principles and practices used in biological and microbiological sciences.
Applicable laboratory experience in both the Biosafety Level-2 (BSL2) and Biosafety Level-3 (BSL3) environments conducting basic science research at an academic or biomedical research institution is preferred.
Relevant management and supervisory experience preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication required in conjunction with exceptional organizational skills.
Work independently on complex projects with minimal direction.
A well-qualified candidate will have knowledge of infectious disease research laboratories and basic familiarity with the operations of specialized HVAC equipment and systems.
Basic familiarity with facility-specific architectural, mechanical (HVAC and controls), electrical, plumbing, and security systems for biocontainment facilities is preferred.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects within the confines of time, budgets and available personnel.
Superior organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Previous experience operating and troubleshooting issues with laboratory equipment is preferred.

Position Summary:

The Influenza Research Institute (IRI) is looking for a skilled Laboratory Facility Technical Specialist to join the IRI Operations Team, and to lead the research facilities component within the team. The IRI is a complex research facility in which studies of viral pathogens are conducted, and is subject to specific biosafety and biosecurity regulations. This individual works under the ultimate direction of the Principal Investigator to ensure that all programmatic elements are functioning in a safe and secure manner. With other Operations Team members, this position will provide technical guidance, training, and inspective/risk analysis of the laboratory safety program to ensure a safe environment in which to facilitate research.

Additional Information:

Must carry on-call phone to respond to after-hour alarms and trach entry/exit of staff in containment area.

The successful candidate must pass a backgound check and be approved by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under 42 CFR 73.8 and the Criminal Justice Information Security Risk Assessment. Must be willing to undergo and maintain a favorable background investigation and National Select Agent Registration security risk assessment.

Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.

Must be able to be certified to wear respiratory protection and other necessary personal protective equipment.

Ability to respond to emergency situations involving potentially infectious materials, ability to wear respiratory protection equipment and associated medical clearance; personal protective equipment is required in some aspects of the work.

At least average agility required in order to investigate/inspect laboratories and animal rooms and perform elevated work. Candidates must be able to physically workin rooms that require specialized biocontainment protective gowning and equipment. Must be able to climb ladders and easily move about confined areas.

Maintain a valid driver's license.

Ability to receive certain immunizations.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
