Dean of the College
Barnard College seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and creative leader to serve as Dean of the College (Dean), Barnard's chief student affairs officer. This is an outstanding opportunity to shape student life at an important moment in the College’s history. The Dean will serve the College's students as an inspiring and respected ally; partner with the President, Provost and Dean of the Faculty (Provost), and the institution's senior team; and extend and strengthen cooperation throughout Barnard—and with Columbia and beyond—to foster an exceptional undergraduate experience that prepares students for lives of personal and professional fulfillment.
Barnard College provides a singular educational experience for talented young women and is a world-renowned college focused on excellence across the arts and sciences. The College is committed to empowering women, with all the academic resources of Columbia University and the City of New York as an extended classroom. Barnard offers unparalleled opportunities with its cosmopolitan setting, a highly engaged student body, stellar academic programs, and commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Its eighth president, Dr. Sian Leah Beilock, joined the College in 2017. Under her leadership, Barnard provides an energized, integrated, and transformative learning environment.
The Dean shapes and defines the experience of students in this learning environment. Reporting to the president and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the Dean will champion students and student affairs; serve as a trusted colleague and partner on the senior team; promote and direct a fully coordinated and inclusive approach to the work of the division; and bring a nuanced understanding of how curricular and co-curricular activities strengthen and complement one another. Leading candidates will be highly effective communicators, and will have the superb judgment and interpersonal skills necessary to cultivate and sustain energy, cooperation, respect, and transparency among all constituencies and stakeholders whose efforts contribute to student living and learning.
