JOB DETAILS:

POSITION: A probationary tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor is available in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department seeks a dynamic candidate with expertise in physics who is committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining an active program involving undergraduates. This appointment carries an initial two-year probationary appointment beginning with the 2019/2020 academic year, August 26, 2019.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in physics or a closely related field (astrophysics, materials science, electrical engineering, etc.) is required. A strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and the ability to establish a research program involving undergraduates is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Evidence of successful university teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. The ability to bring diverse cultural and ethnic experiences and perspectives to the campus and to serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities will be considered an asset.

DUTIES: Teach courses in the Department of Physics and Astronomy based on program needs and in accordance with specialization; participate in research and scholarly activities involving undergraduate students; provide academic advising to students as assigned; engage in service to the department, University and profession.

DEPARTMENT: The Department of Physics and Astronomy is composed of 10 faculty, a program assistant, and an instrumentation specialist. The department graduates 20-25 majors per year. The department strives to provide quality undergraduate education to students with a variety of educational goals. Areas of active research in the department include materials science, surface science, atomic physics, computational physics, and astronomy. The departmental research equipment includes a 24-inch reflecting telescope with CCD camera, a large optics table, a high speed digital camera, a variety of high vacuum sputtering equipment, and wood and metal shops. The department is strongly linked to the interdisciplinary Materials Science Center with a large array of materials characterization instrumentation, including a Raman spectrometer, tensile tester, nanoindenter, 200 keV TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, XRF, FTIR, XRD, STM, SAN, HR-ICPMS and MBE chamber. The department also has access to a high performance supercomputer cluster with 2 GPU nodes, 1 head node, and 8 computing nodes.
