Tufts International Center:

The Tufts International Center provides non-immigrant and immigrant visa services to over 2,000 international students, scholars and faculty and provides advice and support to international students, faculty, research scholars and staff on immigration, social, cultural, personal, academic, financial aspects of adjustment to life at Tufts. The Center is authorized by US Department of State (DOS) as a SEVP certified school and designated Exchange Visitor Program. The Center petitions for other non-immigrant visa petitions such as H-1B, O-1, TN and E3 to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The Tufts International Center is the result of the recent merger of three international student and scholar services offices at the university. It now serves all of Tufts’ eight schools on four campuses in Medford/Somerville, Boston (downtown and Fenway/Museum of Fine Arts), and Grafton, MA. The staff works to ensure that students, faculty/scholars are in legal status while either studying or working at Tufts and to ensure that international students, faculty, staff and scholars have a productive, successful academic or work and personal experience at Tufts University. Position Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior International Officer and Associate Provost, the Director will oversee the operation and management of the Tufts International Center, with presence on four campuses. The Director is responsible for all university compliance issues with the Department of Homeland Security/USCIS, the Department of State, the Department of Labor, and provides leadership in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all international students, faculty and staff. The Director will lead the process of merging three offices to a single, central International Center, including the integration of staff, systems and policies and expansion of programming to serve international members of the entire Tufts community.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Serve as Principal Designated School Official and Responsible Officer, ensuring compliance with federal regulations and policies, reporting to federal agencies, maintenance of SEVIS records
  • Oversee visa issues for other unique programs offered at Tufts, such as summer school, hybrid distance learning programs and executive education
  • Provide leadership to all Tufts’ campuses with regard to immigration policies and compliance standards and protocols for non-immigrant visas and permanent residency sponsorship, including visa support and programming to support international students regarding work options in the United States following graduation
  • Operate and manage the Tufts International Center, including development and oversight of budget and management of Center staff, ensuring performance planning, development and training of staff
  • Oversee DSOs and AROs to ensure that the highest level of immigration experience and compliance are achieved
  • Oversee SEVIS records maintenance and the interface of systems at Tufts’ schools and SEVIS, to ensure accurate reports and statistics university-wide, in conjunction with the Student Information System, Human Resources, and Terradotta software.
  • Oversee the undergraduate pre-orientation program, Global Orientation, which includes leaders and participants world-wide, including Americans.
  • Develop and oversee ongoing programs throughout the year for students and scholars to facilitate and support cultural adjustment and ongoing well-being at Tufts, working closely with Student Affairs and other offices at all of Tufts’ schools, and advocate for international students’ mental/physical health and cultural adjustment/well-being throughout their academic tenure at Tufts
  • Oversee the International House, a special interest housing option on Tufts’ undergraduate campus.
  • Maintain relationships with alumni through hosting alumni and fundraising events worldwide in collaboration with Advancement, Alumni Relations, the International Board of Advisors and Career Services.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in relevant area or knowledge and skills as typically acquired through completion of a Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Specific expertise in immigration law and regulations and in using SEVIS as a Responsible Officer and Principal/Designated Official, and ability and willingness to stay current
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in advising students and scholars in different immigrations statuses (e.g., F-1, J-1, H-1B, O-1, TN, PERM applicants) and SEVIS advising and in international student and scholar programming (e.g., orientation, SEVIS workshops, intercultural programming)
  • Demonstrated diversity and inclusion experience, with sensitivity to cultural differences
  • Demonstrated experience in finance and budget
  • Demonstrated international student affairs experience
  • Ability to manage and build a strong team across different locations
  • Strong leadership skills and experience
  • Preferred: Experience living abroad and foreign language skills
