Job Summary:

The undergraduate College of the University of Chicago is launching a new initiative to support transfer students who are veterans and is seeking the inaugural Associate Director, Veteran Services, to build out this programming. The position will be housed within the undergraduate Career Advancement office and supports undergraduate students interested in career opportunities in all industries. The Associate Director will coordinate veteran students' participation both in Career Advancement programs, as well as in the life of the College more broadly, and serves a coordinator for undergraduate veteran students and first point of contact for all aspects of campus life. Primary areas of responsibility include coaching students on career management and job/fellowship search skills in one-on-one career coaching settings, coordinating with other campus offices that provide veteran services, serving as Posse mentor, and organizing mentoring relationships for veteran students with faculty.


  • Provide high quality career advising to veteran undergraduate students and recent alumni seeking summer, term-time, and full-time employment, research, and advanced degree opportunities. This includes providing regular one-on-one career advising sessions in various formats such as scheduled appointments, walk-ins, and electronic/virtual support and communication.
  • Maintain regular schedule of one-on-one advising appointments and provide additional advising hours during busiest times of the academic year.
  • Serve as a mentor as part of the Posse Scholars program: connect participating students to campus resources, encourage their full participation in the academic life of the College, and assist them with strategies to proactively confront challenges that arise. Meet with these students as a group weekly, and individuals biweekly, throughout the year. Assist planning the Posse retreat, update Posse program on Scholars' progress regularly.
  • Collaborate with campus partners in Academic Advising, Housing, Health & Wellness, First Generation Student Support and Financial Aid to coordinate and develop services tailored to this student population.
  • Coordinate with Academic Advising and Academic departments to assist veteran students in developing and maintaining faculty mentor relationships.
  • Oversees various other high priority projects/programs and reports to senior level stakeholders on these projects.
  • Meets with internal recruiting team on a regular basis regarding hiring trends and opportunities as they relate to veteran students. Meets with recruiters on an occasional basis to discuss recruiting strategies and hiring needs. Track and report placement information of veteran students as part of larger placement tracking efforts.
  • Develop metrics for tracking progress against goals and review goals on a bi-monthly basis with internal team and external colleagues.
  • Partner with industry, regional, or functional student groups to assist in planning and delivering veteran related programming.
  • Analyzes markets and trends as they relate to job searches.

  • Experience working with College students, and diverse College students, preferred.
  • Expertise in counseling, program development, or a related area required.
  • Deep commitment to customer service and the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work successfully in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Experience developing and implementing a successful communication strategy for marketing programs, recruiting volunteers, and/or liaising with student groups required.
  • Experience in developing and implementing programming including workshops.
  • Demonstrated success in maintaining collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies required.
  • Knowledge of career development theory and strong coaching or counseling skills required.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Military service or previous experience working with veterans preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel required.
  • Demonstrated ability to master database programs and shared scheduling system and learn new technologies required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, occasional additional weeknight and weekend days.
