The University of Connecticut Human Rights Institute, in collaboration with the School of Engineering, seeks applications for a one-year residential postdoctoral fellowship beginning August, 2018. Applicants in the social sciences as well as the engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The fellow will work closely with the director and faculty of the Human Rights Institute as well as the dean and key engineering faculty and staff in the School of Engineering to contribute to the development of a growing program centered around joint HR/STEM teaching, mentoring of undergraduate students involved in related field-based learning, and joint interdisciplinary research with key faculty (see: https://humanrights.uconn.edu/2018/01/03/teaching-innovations-human-rights-engineering/). Central themes will depend on the fellow's area of interest and may include environmental and social impact analysis; water, health and food security in low-income regions; climate change adaptation in vulnerable communities or post-conflict settings; risk assessment and stakeholder engagement in industrial development or data security, privacy, and social risk management in relation to new technologies (e.g., robotics, genomics, etc.). The fellow will also foster ongoing outreach and collaborative programming on these and other themes vis a vis leading public, private and civil society-based networks active at the intersection of human rights and engineering, such as the National Center for Science & Civic Engagement/NCSCE (http://ncsce.net/science-and-engineering-for-social-good-2018/) and American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), https://www.aaas.org/program/science-human-rights-coalition.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
  • Researching and drafting proposals, reports and white papers, and/or writing academic publications;
  • Teaching two courses (undergraduate and/or graduate courses related to engineering and human rights);
  • Collaborating on research and curriculum with faculty and graduate and professional students;
  • Establishing new international internship placements related to the project; and
  • Supervising interns and/or consultants involved with the project.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Ph.D. in an applicable field by start date
  2. Demonstrated potential for scholarly activity in engineering for human rights

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Candidates should have strong writing and verbal communication skills
  2. Aptitude for critical analysis of human rights issues and practices at the nexus with engineering, particularly from a global perspective

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment, which may be renewable dependent on funding. The desired start date is August 17, 2018. The fellow will be offered a competitive stipend, health insurance and other benefits, full use of UConn facilities, and office space. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
