The University of Miami Facilities & Operations department is seeking a Project Manager, Access Systems, who plans for the development and implementation of effective integration of electronic & mechanical access control systems standards in relation to construction, renovations, and maintenance projects of varying complexities. Responsible for maintaining all project management aspects of access control standards to provide customer satisfaction, accurate communications for end users, administration and UM stakeholders needs. This position reports to the Director, Energy & Building Systems.

  • Plan, develop, and design electronic & mechanical locking hardware/access control systems standards by formulating and implementing proprietary specifications to be utilized by UM architectural, engineering, and consulting vendors & contractors to ensure accurate and efficient protective service standards for the entire UM community.
  • Direct the development, coordination, and implementation of electronic & mechanical access control systems standards with general construction contractors, subcontractors, and associated manufacturers’ representatives for integrated access control and security systems convergence.
  • Direct the project management of electronic & mechanical access control systems standards implementation for new construction and renovation projects. This includes overseeing the management of hardware equipment schedule design of vendors, timelines, and installation review.
  • Conducts site visits to survey that physical security and safety standards are being followed and identified with necessary recommendations for electronic & mechanical access control systems standards improvements.
  • Responsibilities are executed under general direction, where goals and objectives of the designated subdivision are established and accomplished within prescribed time frame parameters.
  • Reviews project design documents for compliance with UM design guidelines and other applicable codes, as well as for contracts, general contractors, designers, and other technical service as it pertains to electronic & mechanical access control systems standards.
  • Reviews drawings to ensure specifications meet the requirements of contract documents and University standards at each stage of design completion to ensure quality and accuracy of plans, compliance with University standards, project goals, and objectives of electronic & mechanical access control systems.
  • Establish and implement effective procedures to develop and deliver proposals, supplies, and documentation to approve purchase orders, invoices, and other documents
  • Maintain continuous coordination and dialogue to ensure UM Stakeholders needs are incorporated into the design of assigned projects by establishing and maintaining liaisons with vendors, contractors, and other university team members.
  • Jointly plan, program, manage, and assist in coordination of multiple capital and non-capital construction projects consistent with the goals and priorities of the university electronic & mechanical access control system’s needs.
  • Represents the Facilities and Operations on university and community committees meetings. Represents UM in interaction with other universities, educational institutions, and access control security organizations.
  • Serve as the University representative and liaison to Security and Safety Professionals Associations as follows; Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), Door and Hardware Institute (DHI), South Florida Locksmith Association (SOFLA), American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), and International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (iaclea), Safe and Vault Technicians Association (SAVTA), Southeastern Regional Locksmith Associations’ Conference (SERLAC).
  • May direct and coordinate the activities for more than one unit through subordinate supervision.

Bachelor’s Degree and/or Equivalent Security Industry Certifications

Certification and Licensing:



Ten (10) years of physical security experience which includes locksmithing, electronic & mechanical access control systems and security systems convergence.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze,organizeandprioritizeworkunderpressurewhilemeetingdeadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Excellent customer service, communications, and interpersonal skills. Must be professional, responsive, and reliable and exceed customer expectations.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification required: if not already NIMS certified then will be sent for training within 12 months of start date so appropriate certification level can be obtained. This level requires 8 hours of training.
  • Utilizes Primavera Project Planner and schedule & budget software.
  • Assists in the update of the University’s Master plans and design guidelines standards
  • Ability to read physical security specifications, architectural plans, and hardware schedule pertaining to construction blue prints and security drawings.

Department Specific Functions:

All regular functions are carried out on a project basis with projects assigned by the Associate Vice President for Facilities Design & Construction including, but not limited to:

  • Project Manager, Access Systems will have multi-campus responsibilities, as well as responsibilities at various satellite locations. Projects will include complex healthcare, lab and research facilities.
  • Keep client informed of progress and change actions during the project on a weekly basis. Generate monthly status reports incorporating updated schedules, cost projections, photos, and status and prepare cost reports on a regular basis.
