The South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR), located in South Dakota’s capitol city of Pierre, SD, is seeking nominations and applications for a dynamic leader for SDBOR System Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). The successful applicant will have the opportunity to provide strategic academic leadership for the state’s six public universities. The public university system contributes in vital and substantial ways to South Dakota’s economic growth and well-being by producing graduates who can succeed in a competitive workforce, contribute to South Dakota’s economic development, and become South Dakota’s emerging new leaders of government, business, and education.

Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director & CEO, the VPAA serves as the chief academic officer for the Regental system. The VPAA provides vision and strategic leadership to develop and execute academic quality and meet statewide student success and completion goals in the system strategic plan. The VPAA develops and manages policies and works with multiple constituencies both internal and external to the Regental system. The SDBOR VPAA fosters relationships with partners in state government, seeks cooperative opportunities with the K-12 community, finds educational intersections with the South Dakota Tech Schools, maintains collegial relationships with the South Dakota private universities, and regularly reports or testifies before the legislature on issues pertinent to higher education in South Dakota. The VPAA gives statewide direction and oversight to undergraduate and graduate academic program approval and review, oversights compliance with system policies and state guidelines, and coordinates curriculum with accreditation criteria. The VPAA also has direct oversight for a number of areas that assist the Regental system in meeting its strategic goals including the implementation of common instructional technology solutions, managing state scholarship programs, maintaining critical library consortia across the state, and coordinating institutional research activities. Work is performed within policies included in state and federal law and administrative regulations with wide latitude for the exercise of leadership, collaboration, independent judgment, and decision making.

The successful candidate will possess an earned terminal degree and evidence of successful and comprehensive academic leadership responsibilities in a higher education system, college, or university. Critical to the new VPAA’s success will be a track record of being a successful change agent, building partnerships, and leading innovation in a complex organization or system. Successful experience in strategic planning, managing an office staff, and resource development and allocation is desired.
