Integrated Science Lab Director

Job description


This position is responsible for the preparation of the laboratory curriculum for the department’s Integrated Science laboratories, and teaching a number of those lab sections as specified each semester.  Responsibilities also include updating laboratory curricula to match best practices in science education, and assessment of the educational effectiveness of the Integrated Science curriculum.  This position may teach other departmental courses on an as-needed basis.

Reporting to the Dean of Science, this position performs or works independently/collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:

In conjunction with faculty, developing the Integrated Science lab curriculum, including new inquiry-based labs.

Preparation of Integrated Science lab sections, including:  ordering, organizing and maintaining reagent/supply stocks and equipment used in the labs, inspection and maintenance of lab equipment; preparation of lab manuals; posting of lab support material on Sakai site.

Hire, train, coordinate and supervise undergraduate Teaching Assistants (TA’s). 

Teach the required number of lab sections specified each semester.

Be available to meet with students; oversee end of semester evaluations of TAs.

Keep abreast of developments in Integrated Science pedagogy, including attending education conferences.  Work with faculty to design and implement new curricula that align with best practices in science education.

Performs other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.

A Masters or Ph.D. in science, preferably in an interdisciplinary field, or experience bridging between Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

EXPERIENCE:  Prior experience teaching and/or designing inquiry-based labs is preferred.

LICENSES:  A valid C Class driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Moderate (20-50 lbs.)



The successful candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to supervise and organize teams. 

The candidate’s training and experience should display breadth across the broad fields of science. 

Experience and proficiency with computers and software such as Word and Excel is required.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and coordinate undergraduate Teaching Assistants. 



REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,  Monday – Friday.  Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required.  Travel may be required.  Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
