Machinist and Laboratory Manager

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Machinist & Laboratory Manager position will work with students, under the guidance and direction of faculty, to support the needs of the academic programs, research initiatives, and other student-focused activities in the machine shop and design laboratory.  The successful candidate will be able to operate machine tools to fabricate student projects and research tools, conduct safety training for faculty and students, manage student access to the equipment, and coordinate actives for smooth efficient operation of the equipment and laboratory.

 

Job Description    

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the day-to-day activities of the machine shop and design laboratory and with a focus on student projects, prototype products, and research tools.
  • Operate machine tools with responsibility for CNC and manual milling machines, lathe, horizontal and vertical band saws, drill press, welding machines, etc.  Also, have an understanding of basic programming related to CNC milling machines and familiarity with CAD, drawing software.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations. Facilitate a safe laboratory and shop environment, including, but not limited to, the following:

a)      Orient students, faculty, and staff on the capabilities and resources available in the design and fabrication shop

b)      Supervise students in the proper use of equipment and safe laboratory techniques

c)      Train faculty and students on proper use of equipment, as needed

d)      Advise and ensure use of personal protective equipment, and safe handling, storage, and disposal of potentially hazardous chemicals

  • Maintain clean, organized facility.

a)      Support with regular maintenance of equipment

b)      Keep orderly, accessible inventories of supplies

c)      Maintain documentation, including manuals, safety documents and contacts

d)      Collaborate in scheduling to effectively use shared laboratory facilities

e)      Ability to trouble shoot malfunctioning equipment

  • Manages student access to equipment based on training and safety protocols. 

·         Oversees students and/or student workers in any of the above activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·         Extensive knowledge and safe use of machine tools (CNC manual milling machines, lathe, horizontal and vertical band saws, drill press, welding machines and other equipment) and basic shop operation is required.

·         Must know how to assemble electrical and mechanical components.

·        Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel.

·         Must be able to use essential manually operated and CNC machine shop equipment including mills, lathes, band saws, laser cutter, welding equipment, and hand tools.

·         Demonstrated understanding of technical drawings, dimensioning, and tolerances is required.

·         Demonstrated competency in CAD software (SolidWorks) and CNC machine programming.

·         Must be able to use precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges and dial indicators.

·         Basic understanding of electronics and mechanics.

·         Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, with the ability to work positively with students, staff and faculty.

·         Excellent organizational skills that include effective planning, time management and multi-tasking.

·         Must have excellent project management and problem solving skills.

·         Must be able to work independently as well as to work collaboratively.

·         Demonstrated customer service orientation.

·         Must have a strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·         High school diploma, plus additional, relevant coursework (A.S./B.S preferred).

·         Certifications and documented formal training as machinist and/or toolmaker.

·         A minimum of five (5) years’ machining experience is required.

·         Supervisory experience of full service machine shop or instrument shop, preferably in a university environment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • This position requires a criminal background check.
  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE:  This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.

TARGET HIRING SALARY:       $55,682 - $60,742, commensurate with experience.
