Position Summary

The research in the Braasch laboratory focuses on genomic and developmental changes that contribute to major transitions during the course of vertebrate evolution and studies evolutionary novelties at the levels of genome structure, gene family evolution, and gene regulation using various fish species (zebrafish, medaka, gar) as model systems. The ideal candidate will be expected to perform and document a variety of tasks in a timely, accurate and detailed manner, meet with the PI on a weekly basis and provide support to graduate students and postdocs in the lab. Primary duties may include, but are not limited to: perform experiments under supervision of laboratory head; provide support with molecular biology, next-generation sequencing, genome editing, and developmental biology projects; lab management including ordering supplies and equipment; lab supply and equipment maintenance and organization; maintaining and documenting lab cleanliness and safety standards; managing lab databases (such as plasmid database, antibody database); equipment maintenance; supervising and training undergraduate students, staff, and volunteers. This is a limited term position funded for one year from the date of hire with possible extension contingent upon funding renewal.  

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be required by completing a four-year college degree program in Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field of biological sciences; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology or related field. One-two years post degree experience working in a molecular biology/developmental biology/genetics/genomics lab; knowledge of fish/vertebrate biology, development, evolution, and genetics; experience with next generation sequencing approaches; experience with genome editing and transgenesis; experience with developmental biology techniques (e.g. in situ hybridization); experience with microscopy and imaging techniques; strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong time management skills; strong organizational skills; evidence of experience with project planning; evidence of enthusiasm to master new techniques; evidence of accurate performance and attention to detail; evidence of prior research goals; evidence of accurate and detailed record keeping; evidence of competence in data analysis; experience with use of various desktop (e.g. Microsoft Office, Dropbox) and bioinformatic (e.g. Geneious, MEGA) computer software and genomic databases (e.g. NCBI, Ensembl, UCSC browsers); experience in laboratory management; experience with ordering and managing laboratory supplies and equipment; experience working with university EHS and/or IACUC units.
