Under the direction of the Associate Director Business Services and Chief Financial Officer, this position serves as the financial specialist for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) - Department of Surgery (DOS).The department currently consist of over 800 faculty and staff in 8 divisions representing clinical operations, educational units, service units, research activities and administrative units. The departments have a combined annual operating budget derived from University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation (UWMF) clinical income, extramural research, direct support from the UWSMPH and University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics (UWHC), revenue producing accounts, education accounts, and graduate school accounts, contributions to UW Foundation (UWF) accounts, and investment earnings and appreciation. The operations of the department is complex due to the interrelated activities with the UWSHMPH, the UWMF, the UWF, and the UWHC.
This position works with the Department of Surgery Central Office of Clinical Research to provide oversight of the budgeting, invoicing and payment reconciliation related to sponsor and investigator-initiated clinical trials. This position provides leadership in the areas of general ledger structure, transaction processing and policy development to ensure that financial transactions are recorded in an efficient and accurate manner that provides consistency and integrity for management and financial reporting. Due to the highly complex nature and variety of automated systems, this position provides direction, policy guidance, technical assistance, and financial expertise to management, faculty, staff, and external partners.
The position functions with a great degree of independence in performing the duties and responsibilities and is required to have excellent interpersonal skills as well as an understanding of the structure, policies, procedures and complex automated financial and research management computer systems. The candidate is expected to model a high degree of professionalism, which includes demonstrating honesty, integrity, accountability and a commitment to altruism in all work interactions and responsibilities.
