The Carter G. Woodson Institute and Department of African American and African Studies invites applications for a professorship in Race and Environmental Justice in the United States and/or other countries of the African Diaspora. We invite applications from across the range of humanities and social science disciplines. Desirable research and teaching interests include, but are not limited to, urban history/studies, political economy, planning and development, literature, philosophy, science and technology, public health, and social movements. We are especially interested in candidates with a background in community-engaged scholarship and teaching. We seek candidates who show exceptional accomplishment as scholars, teachers and mentors and who can offer broad courses that integrate interdisciplinary perspectives. Preference will be given to candidates who hold the rank of Associate or Full Professor, but we will also consider candidates who have a proven record of scholarly engagement and publication at the assistant level. Candidates must hold a PHD in a relevant field at the time of appointment and should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and to service.
This position is part of a pan-University, interdisciplinary cluster hire in Race and Inequality. This cross-Grounds initiative builds on UVA's commitment to creating, advancing, and sustaining a research mission devoted to the study of race, civil rights, and social justice. The cluster includes four tenure-track searches to be conducted by departments across the College of Arts & Sciences, with participation by the humanities, science, and social science divisions, as well as the School of Law and the Curry School of Education.
