Job Description Summary:

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking a Director of Development for the George Washington University School of Nursing. DAR is responsible for leading the university's alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

The Director of Development will report to the Senior Associate Vice President, Schools & Academic Units. This role includes working alongside Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) staff across the division to create and execute a sustainable development program that will broaden GWs base of philanthropic support. This position will work closely with the Dean of the School of Nursing and will divide his/her time between GW's Foggy Bottom Campus and the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA where GW's nursing programs are housed.

The Director of Development is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of 100-120 major gift prospects for their respective school and/or division. This position will also develop and execute a strategy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts in the range of $50,000 to $1M and continue to build the fundraising program for the School, which was reestablished at GW in 2012. The Director of Development will build strong relationships with GW alumni and friends, facilitating annual philanthropic support to grow annual attainment for the school. This position requires one-on-one engagement with portfolio and will complete approximately 120 visits per year in pursuit of this goal.

The Director of Development also supports the development strategy and management within the School of Nursing. The Director of Development is essential for achieving ambitious goals for philanthropic support for faculty support, student support, academic programs, and capital priorities. The position will provide senior leadership for one direct report and mentorship for any assistant and associate director-level gift officers as assigned both within Nursing and across the university. This position will work closely with the Dean and School of Nursing Faculty and Emeriti Faculty to develop and execute sustainable fundraising programs that result in significant philanthropic investment and resources for the faculty, students, and programs. The Director of Development will also participate in working group and activities within DAR that advance university fundraising and contribute to a productive fundraising environment. This college fundraising leader will serve as an honest broker of donor interests and fundraising opportunities for a variety of areas within their school and/or division and across campus and model a collaborative approach to fundraising at all times. This position will also provide direct support to the dean, administrative leadership, volunteers, and faculty as needed, including but not limited to producing and sharing briefing materials, staffing donor visits and drafting proposals and correspondence. The Director of Development will handle sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner and will display a willingness to make cold calls in order to successfully schedule face to face visits with donor prospects; The ideal candidate is able to utilize considerable initiative, independence, and originality to lead projects, guide donor prospects toward philanthropic priorities, and develop new methods and techniques for donor engagement.


Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward 100-120 major gift prospects for respective school and/or division. Gift Range: $50,000-$1M.

Coordinate and collaborate with school and central development staff to identify prospects, develop proposals, and cultivate strategic relationships with funding sources.

Work with school development leadership, faculty, and central development teams to identify major gift prospects.

Work with development teams, faculty, and volunteers to establish programs and strategies for the cultivation of identified major gift prospects, including visits by appropriate faculty, social events, advisory boards, and other efforts.

Make personal calls to solicit major gifts for constituent units.

Works in conjunction with Alumni Relations on strategies for enhancing alumni engagement and loyalty to the Schools through specific events and activities.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, public relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary. An advanced degree is preferred.

A minimum of six years of fund raising experience is preferred, with specific experience in major gifts, relationship and volunteer management.

Demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting gifts at the six- and seven-figure level.

Familiarity with donor management systems and a high degree of comfort with using technology to communicate, track, and share information.

Strategic planning skills that include the ability to develop, implement, and monitor short-and long-term goals for engagement, donor acquisition and retention.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational, interpersonal and project management skills.

Understanding of higher education and philanthropy.

A strong record of collaborating with a team to achieve goals.

Ability to travel locally and nationally when necessary and to work on occasional evenings and weekends.
