Position Summary

MSU IT Finance supports a dynamic and growing organization of more than 600 IT professionals across MSU's campuses in Michigan.

The successful candidate will play a key role in researching, preparing, and verifying the accuracy of financial statements and reports to provide information for departmental personnel.  The role includes developing, implementing, and overseeing accounting controls for the department; preparing and reviewing general journal accounting entries, and reconciling department records to university account ledgers.

Accountant II personnel in the IT department maintain and oversee records on accounts, including initiation, review, and approval of transactions within our Kuali Financial System (KFS) and Systems Application and Projects (SAP) documents in our enterprise resource planning software.  They also interpret and audit associated budgets and/or activities ensuring fiscal responsibility for MSU financial resources in accordance with MSU business policies.

Will act as lead worker over accounting staff at lower levels, provide regular assistance to executive managers and other key support staff with unit budget development for general operations and projects.

This position requires strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills, be detail oriented and the ability to prioritize while simultaneously overseeing multiple tasks with accuracy.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a positive and productive attitude are especially important.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in accounting; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervision, accounting procedures and developing accounting controls, policies and procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Desired Qualifications
  • KFS financial system, including Planning Analytics budget tool training
  • Ability to create reports and pivot tables using Microsoft Excel and Query Studio
  • Understanding of government accounting standards
