Job description

Position Summary

This position is located in the Research Technology Support Facility Genomics Core at Michigan State University. The portfolio of services and instruments available through the Genomics Core is constantly changing, but they include Sanger sequencing, next-generation high-throughput sequencing, amplicon sequencing, marker analysis, qPCR and digital expression analysis.  In the future, the Genomics Core is planning to offer long-read sequencing and nucleic acid purification services to the MSU research community.  The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for multiple Genomics Core services including next-generation sequencing library preparation and the operation and maintenance of next-generation sequencing instruments. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in biology or related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in an area related to research being performed; a demonstrated attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills; may require software expertise specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and/or more than three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a similar position.  Experience with purification of DNA and RNA (extraction kits and phenol/chloroform extraction protocols), quantification of DNA and RNA (Qubit, Nanodrop, Bioanalyzer), Illumina-compatible next-generation library preparation, performing various molecular biology techniques (solution preparation, agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, cloning, PCR, enzymatic reactions), bioinformatics analysis techniques and other standard laboratory procedures and equipment.
