The Young Writers Workshop of the University of Virginia, established in 1982 as the nation's flagship program for teenage writers, is in its fourth decade of bringing together a community of writers from across the country and beyond its borders with a common purpose: to create a supportive, non-competitive environment where writers in grades 9-12 can live and work together as artists.

Sponsored by the Curry School of Education, the Young Writers Workshop is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director of Extracurricular Programming to staff its summer program for aspiring teenage writers located on the campus of Sweet Briar College. Assistant Director of Extracurricular Planning facilitates extracurricular and special event plans for the Young Writers Workshop. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for: developing the annual theme for the Young Writers Workshop Student Guidebook and directing theme related activities; managing student rosters for extracurricular programs and events; overseeing program publications and products; coordinating extracurricular events and calendars with the Residential Program Director; collaborating with the administrative team on daily tasks; conducting weekly workshop, lab, and elective observations; and facilitating the program opening and closing ceremonies.

Applicants must have a Master of Teaching (MT), Master of Education (M.Ed.), or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in English, Humanities, or Creative Writing. Post-master's degree graduate hours in creative writing and/or teaching creative writing are preferred. At least one year of teaching middle school or high school is required, as is at least two years of past administrative and/or teaching experience in the Young Writers Workshop. At least one year of supervising adolescents as a teacher or counselor in an academic or extracurricular day, weekend, or residential program is also required. At least one year teaching in and or administrating creative writing and or performing arts programs is preferred, as is the ability to work collaboratively on a team. Two or more years of experience supervising adolescents as a teacher or counselor in an academic or extracurricular day, weekend, or residential program is also preferred. Knowledge of writing pedagogy and genre specific forms is required. An understanding and application of the creative process to learning and written expression is required, as is effective oral and written communication. The ability to work collaboratively on a team is preferred. Knowledge of basic word processing and computer programs is required. Electronic database experience is also required. A provisional or professional teaching certificate in English or one of the Performing arts (drama, dance, music) is preferred, as is CPR Training and First Aid Certification. Experience with database applications is preferred.

The Assistant Director for Extracurricular Programming position is for 6 weeks during the summer, June 10 -July 28, 2019. Position works in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
