Two Specialist positions are available in the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. Under the direction of Principal Investigator Valerie Olson, the Specialists will participate in collaborative community engaged ethnographic research associated with a one-year, multi-institution study on the strengths and needs of communities in a Southern California watershed. Main tasks include, but are not limited to:
1) Developing and conducting appropriate community engagement activities as assigned that result in the successful recruitment and participation of a representative population of subjects for ethnographic research data collection as defined by the funder, including but not limited to community listening workshops, interviews, focus groups, and archival data collection. Specific tasks will include but are not limited to: leading the development and implementation of successful community engagement strategies and data collection according to the funder's requirements; supervising and training research staff; assisting study partners with community and water authority engagements as defined in the project's scope of work; designing follow-up community engagement activities to report findings to the same populations engaged for recruitment and participation.
2) Participating in the production of ethnographic data collection, protocol development, data analysis and writing in ways that can be transferred to watershed water agencies and partners, including: development of community engagement protocols and training materials, translations of those materials into products for use by government and NGO partners, and contributing to the collaborative writing and editing of final reports as required.
3) Providing review, reports, and content as appropriate based on project scope of work activities.
4) Project management duties, including but not limited to: producing monthly and/or quarterly progress reports of engagement progress and other assigned activities; contributing to study monitoring; data management and maintenance.
5) Participating in other study presentation and communication activities as assigned, including but not limited to: technical advisory committee meetings, engagement and education events throughout the watershed, conferences, etc. Participating in other Department of Anthropology activities as needed, including but not limited to communicating 2018-2019 school year.
Requirements - Candidates must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application in anthropology or sociology. Candidates must have a relevant ethnographic research and proven community engagement profile, including: ethnography of community and regional level environmental insecurity and vulnerability, preferably in the study area of Southern California; research on California environmental processes, with a preference for work on water agencies, water policy, and/or water decision making; and proven skills in successfully implemented community-engaged research, training, and evaluation. Candidates should also have 3-5 years of progressive project coordination, engagement, and data management experience, including: outreach and subject recruitment per assigned population targets; conducting literature reviews; data coordination, monitoring, and management; and preparing reports. Candidates must be able to travel within the regional study area as determined by the project.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing ethnographic research instruments and supervising research assistants. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a record of scholarly excellence and achievement through research publications, teaching, and service.
The appointment is scheduled to begin as early as October 9, 2018 for a period of one year. There is not currently an option for renewal. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Travel expenses for research activities related to the study will be reimbursed as provided by funding parameters. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
