Princeton University, one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions, seeks an accomplished public safety professional to lead and manage the operations of a world-class department of public safety dedicated to protecting the safety and security of more than 14,000 students, faculty, and staff, and 850,000 annual visitors to the campus, as well as the University's physical assets.











Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of Public Safety (ED), the Deputy Director and Director of Operations serves as second in command and as acting Executive Director in the ED's absence leading this CALEA-accredited 24/7 Department of Public Safety (DPS). On a day-to-day basis s/he is responsible for DPS's Operations Division, including the Detective Bureau, Communications Center, and IT, and its 5-member leadership team; training, professional development, accreditation, and compliance programs; coordinating the activities of the department's sworn and non-sworn personnel, and serving as a key liaison with union representatives for these commissioned police and non-commissioned security officers who comprise more than half of the department's 112 full-time members. S/he will leverage existing state-of-the-art technology and assist in the design and implementation of new systems and technologies to enhance the safety of the community. The overarching role is to ensure the department's capacity to foster a deep connection with the campus community, with a focus on providing service to and taking care of its constituents through a community caretaking approach to public safety.



In this highly visible role, the Deputy Director/Director of Operations will serve as a partner to the ED and will collaborate with and serve as a key liaison and advisor to the campus on public safety issues and law enforcement operations, and will work closely with leadership and colleagues across the institution in the continuous improvement of emergency preparedness and management efforts. S/he will manage command of major incidents, emergency situations, and special events, and will work in close collaboration with town, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies and other safety and security services on a range of activities, including response to accidents, medical or fire emergencies, and requests for assistance. S/he will also serve as the department's representative with the media. The successful candidate will be expected to reside within a 30 mile radius of campus.

Qualifications

The Deputy Director/Director of Operations will be a highly collaborative manager and leader with outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills, and proven ability to inspire and build relationships of confidence and trust. S/he will bring a strong record of achievement in safety and security, and embrace the Department and University's commitment to a community caretaking philosophy around public safety and the significant dedication of time and energy that requires. S/he will also bring demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, and proven ability to work effectively in a richly diverse community and with individuals at all levels of the organization. The ideal candidate will bring at least 10 years of progressively responsible public safety experience including 5 years at a management and supervisory level, preferably in a higher education setting. A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree in a relevant discipline is strongly preferred.
