The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Professional and Technical Writing. This position is located on the Statesboro campus, but may require teaching on the other campuses.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics offers a B.A. degree in Writing with coursework in four areas: Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Writing, Writing Studies, and Linguistics. In addition to the major, the Department also offers minors in writing, linguistics, and professional and technical writing, and an online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. The Department is an active participant in the online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program housed in the College of Arts and Humanities, and the interdisciplinary MA and online graduate certificate in Professional Communication and Leadership. The Department also defines and teaches the required two-semester sequence of First-Year Writing courses.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Assistant Professor of Professional and Technical Writing will provide teaching (both online and face-to-face classes), research, and service. The ideal candidate will contribute to the growth and development of the Professional and Technical Writing area, the online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program, and the M.A. in Professional Communication and Leadership, along with other Department programs and activities (which may include First-Year Writing). The position is a ten-month tenure-track appointment teaching three courses per term (six courses per year), and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Summer teaching is available but not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in a field relevant and suitable to the Department of Writing and Linguistics—such as Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing; Rhetoric and Composition; Linguistics; or closely related field. The degree must be in hand by August 1, 2019.
  • Scholarly agenda relevant to Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing.
  • At least one year of part-time college-level teaching experience (may include graduate assistant teaching experience).
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of effective college-level teaching.
  • Experience teaching Professional and Technical Writing courses.
  • Relevant industry and professional experience.
  • Interest in teaching and developing courses in usability and UX, rhetoric of science, digital media production, rhetorics of health and medicine, and content strategy.
  • Publications or conference presentations in Technical, Professional, or Scientific Writing, or other relevant fields.
  • Experience developing and teaching online courses and programs.
  • Working knowledge of professionally relevant tools and technologies.
