Additional Information Purpose Working closely with preparators and registrars, the assistant preparator is responsible for art handling, installation, preparation and packing of the permanent collection, exhibitions and loans. Responsible for the special handling of works on paper and artwork setup for photography.

Essential Functions Handling works of art in various situations according to Blanton guidelines and standard museum practices. Install and deinstall works of art. Pack and unpack works of art always following provided instructions or improving them for the safety of the objects in coordination with the registrar assigned to each project. Move works of art safely within storage areas and throughout the building. Responsible for the safe handling of unframed works on paper in coordination with preparator for matting and framing. Assist photography and conservation departments in movement of art to and from the laboratories and inside them during treatment and photography. Assist with receiving and releasing works of art as well as assist with loading and unloading from vans and trucks and secure each shipment in coordination with registrar assigned to each project. Responsible for maintenance of art storage areas and all art preparation areas as well as keeping all tools and supplies secure and in stock. Responsible for documentation of location change after each art move. Prepare works of art for loan, installation or storage as scheduled by registrars or conservator by secure existing frame, add felt linings or spacers, glaze, attach backing boards, construct special mounts, retrofit crates, etc. Assist with carpentry work as needed including maintenance of the shop, tools and materials. Assist with painting walls, ceilings, pedestals, mounts, etc as needed. Assist with art lighting as needed as well as maintenance of lighting inventory when requested. Assist with local pickups or deliveries using Blanton art van. Maintain strict confidentially of all Blanton projects, personnel issues, shipments and art movement schedules. Project a positive and professional image of the museum, representing the department to professional colleagues and the external community. A deep appreciation of the mission and aspirations of the Blanton and the capability to articulate the Blanton's mission, values, achievements, potential and priorities to internal and external audiences.

Marginal/Incidental functions Other related functions as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications Three years of experience as professional art handler. High school graduation or GED. Two years of experience in museum lighting with knowledge of appropriate light levels for all types of art. Ability and skill to safely employ the use of a variety of tools, aerial platform lift, palette jack, forklift, ladders. scaffolding and other heavy equipment and to handle oversized and heavy art objects and exhibition material. Experience using painting equipment. Excellent speaking and understanding of the English language including art history terms and techniques. Ability to deal effectively with the public, guest artists, scholars, vendors and staff. Must be able to visually inspect artwork. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, lift, push and pull heavy, fragile odd shaped objects carefully. Must be able to carry 50 lbs. Ability to follow instructions and work cooperatively with a team. Valid Class C operator's driver's license with acceptable driving record. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications Three years of experience as professional art handler in a museum setting. Bachelor's degree will substitute for up to four years of experience but must have the kind of experience required. Microsoft Office Suite skills preferred. Knowledge and experience in collections database systems preferred.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
