Research expenditures total *$130 million* annually. *43,000 volunteers* and advisory leaders engage 2 million face-to-face contacts annually. *28,287 living CALS Alumni* make up the pride of the Wolfpack! *About CALS Advancement* The mission of the Office of College Advancement (CALS Advancement) is to enhance, promote and support the academic programs, research and extension efforts of the College. Within CALS Advancement are the NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc. and the NC Tobacco Foundation, Inc. non-profit, 501(c)3 organizations formed as a means of supporting agricultural research, extension and teaching activities in the College. The CALS Advancement team works in close partnership with the central University Advancement Office and its partner colleges. In 2016, NC State launched the Think and Do the Extraordinary Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of the University with a $1.6 billion goal. Priorities include dramatically increasing endowments to benefit students and faculty, enhancing facilities and strengthening support for current operations. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' goal in the campaign is $400 million with an emphasis on scholarships, professorships, research and continued investment in NC State Extension. *About the Food Animal Systems* Agriculture contributes $84 billion to the state's economy - more than 60% stems from food animal production. NC State's Food Animal Systems - a $200 million initiative supporting the largest segment of the agricultural industry in the state of North Carolina - will: fully integrate the food animal systems; establish a transdisciplinary academy for food animal health and production; provide education and training that will propel NC Animal Agriculture to the next level of productivity and sustainability and result in leaders across agriculture, life science, veterinary and engineering fields; expand our Extension expertise and partnership opportunities; and build a true farm-to-fork model farm for consumer education programs and engagement. *About Plant Sciences and the Plant Sciences Initiative* The NC Plant Sciences Initiative meets a critical need as outlined in the below excerpt from the "North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative: An Economic Feasibility Study:" "As a leading economic sector, agriculture is responsible for employing over *2 billion people* globally, providing for the economic well-being of countless families in both the developed and developing world. Closer to home, the agricultural sector is currently responsible for *one in every 12 U.S. jobs.* In North Carolina, agriculture and its value chain represent the largest industry in the state. The current and future importance of plant sciences to global well-being and progress is hard to overstate. Plant sciences and plant biotechnology are faced with an awesome responsibility of feeding a rapidly expanding global population, enhancing and protecting human health, preserving the environment and global biodiversity and providing input to a growing green industry economy. When examining the diverse geographic nature of agriculture and other urban and rural environments and natural lands, the scope of challenges addressed, and its critically important role in supporting global and local economic systems, plant sciences are as important today, and into the foreseeable future, as they have ever been. Recognizing the opportunity to cement North Carolina as the leading global location for advancing the plant sciences, NC State University has proposed to develop a plant sciences initiative with an associated plant sciences building on the Centennial Campus that would be unequaled in US academia and serve as a powerful hub for plant science innovations to reinforce North Carolina agriculture, innovative research collaborations with North Carolina's major base of ag biotechnology corporations, and form a state of the art education center for producing the plant scientists of the future." *About NC State Extension* NC State Extension is one component of a strategic partnership among NC State University, N.C. Essential Job Duties: CALS Advancement is recruiting for three (3) separate Senior Director of Development positions that will report to the Assistant Dean. These positions include the Senior Director of Development for Food Animal Systems, the Senior Director of Development for Plant Systems, and the Senior Director of Development for NC State Extension. Each selected candidate will be hired within the fundraising priority area that best fits his/her expertise and interests. The successful candidate for each position will assume a senior role in the fundraising operations of CALS. As such he/she will be expected to set an example for applying best practice to his/her work. The successful candidates will lead by example and set and attain a high standard in fundraising activity and outcomes. He/she will not only inspire donors to support CALS initiatives but will also inspire his/her colleagues by raising the bar and applying the utmost professional work ethic and focus on the work of fundraising. The successful candidates will help strengthen a fundraising culture in CALS with a laser like focus on portfolio management and pipeline building, while also embracing accountability. The Senior Directors will augment our already collaborative culture with an eagerness to work with colleagues from across campus to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward supporters of CALS. Each of the three (3) Senior Director positions will focus on a separate fundraising area of focus within CALS. One Senior Director will work closely with the heads of the Food Animal Systems and focus on providing leadership for directing private fundraising for the Food Animal Systems. A second Senior Director will work with the Associate Dean for CALS and Director of NC State Extension and will be responsible for providing leadership for all aspects of fundraising for NC State Extension in the CALS. Finally, the third Senior Director will coordinate research fundraising with the Associate Dean and the Director for the NC Agricultural Research Service (NCARS) and the NCARS team. This position will focus on providing leadership in securing support from corporations, commodity organizations, philanthropic foundations and individuals for special projects. He/she will also work closely with the Plant Sciences Initiative Director to lead the successful completion of the Plant Sciences building fundraising initiative of $25 million and lead other multi-million-dollar research-based projects as assigned. *Once more, each selected candidate will be hired within the fundraising priority area that best fits his/her expertise and interests.* *Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:* * Identify, cultivate and solicit gifts of $50,000+ from individuals, alumni, corporations and foundations to create and grow a pipeline of major gift donors. * Conduct at least 150 primary meetings and 250 secondary personal meetings with prospects and donors, and participate in a minimum of 25 solicitations annually. * Provide strategic development and management of a portfolio with approximately 125 -175 prospects and donors. * Each of the Senior Directors will serve as an active team member with the Food Animal Systems Initiative, NC State Extension, or Plant Sciences Initiative (as assigned) in the development and implementation of short-term and long-term planning objectives as it pertains to major gift cultivation. ** Gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific position's fundraising priority area and other special projects/college initiatives and make a persuasive oral and written case for supporting key programs. ** Develop and implement immediate and long-range plans for enhancing the image of and expanding major gift support. ** Work closely with all pertinent Associate Deans and other members of the CALS leadership team to develop fundraising priorities. * Create and implement comprehensive strategies to leverage networks and maximize fundraising results. * Collaborate with College leadership, department heads, program leaders, faculty and colleagues to help align donors' philanthropic interests with assigned priority area. * Develop multi-year strategies to solicit donors/prospects in support of priority areas. * Provide stewardship and manage relationships with approximately 150 donors and prospects. Coordinate stewardship efforts as needed with appropriate University Advancement and other campus colleagues. * Develop clear understanding and appreciation of the mission, vision and values of CALS and the priority areas. * Develop strategic relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, volunteers, friends, students, corporations, foundations, industry partners and campus colleagues that result in effective partnerships and increased philanthropic funding. * Provide guidance and leadership for the any relevant Board of Directors such as the NC Agricultural and Life Sciences Research Foundation or the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agriculture Programs Foundation. * The selected candidate for the position of Senior Director of Development for Plant Systems will be expected to lead one (1) Director of Development and one (1) Administrative Assistant. * The selected candidate for the position of Senior Director of Development for NC State Extension will be expected to lead a team of Development Officers who will support the development activities of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agriculture Programs Foundation and the NC 4-H Development Fund. Coordinate with the development officer assigned to the ECA and FCS Foundation on fundraising and board activities. *Opportunities, expectations and qualifications* The three (3) Senior Director of Development positions will actively manage a focused portfolio of major gift prospects and donors by personally participating in their cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, to expand the base of major gift prospects for specific projects. The incumbents will continue to build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between academic leadership, faculty and staff on the one hand and external audiences such as donors, alumni, and business and community leaders on the other. The Senior Directors must have extensive experience in developing, implementing and managing fundraising strategies. All three (3) people are required to have strong analytical skills and the ability to be creative in establishing and implementing processes. The Senior Directors will be experienced and talented major and principal gift fundraisers with a successful track record of engagement with prospects and donors at the six-, seven- and even eight-figure levels; or they will demonstrate a level of experience that indicates a strong history of building relationships that led to the successful completion of projects. The individuals will have the particular ability to develop and execute strategy and will be proven planners and executors of those plans. The incumbents will be expected to meet annual goals for activity and results. A collaborative approach to leadership is a critical requirement. The Senior Directors must interface with a significant number and wide diversity of people and programs to optimize performance. For this reason, diplomacy, tact, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and, above all, unquestioned integrity are necessary ingredients. The positions also require an open and accessible interpersonal style, an unrelenting commitment to a collegial team approach, exceptional reasoning, openness to new ideas and their implementation, ability to react and adapt to changing situations appropriately, and tolerance for ambiguity.

Minimum Education/Experience: * Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. An advanced degree or fundraising credential is preferred. * At least 5 years (7 preferred) of demonstrated experience in front line fundraising or related professional experience, with a track record of success in securing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals and proven experience working with 6-and 7-figure gifts or related professional experience, including the ability to evaluate, qualify and move prospects through the cultivation/solicitation cycle.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Fundraising experience in a university setting or relevant industry experience. * Experience in working through a capital campaign.

Necessary Licenses and Certifications: * A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
