The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Humanities invites applications and nominations for the position of Lecturer of Linguistics and English as a Second Language (ESL). This position is located on the Statesboro campus, but may require teaching on the other campuses.

Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics offers a B.A. degree in Writing with coursework in four areas: applied linguistics/linguistics, creative writing, professional and technical writing, and writing studies. In addition to the major, the Department also offers an online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, and minors in applied linguistics, linguistics, professional and technical writing, and writing. The Department is an active participant in the online Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program housed in the College of Arts and Humanities, and the interdisciplinary MA and online graduate certificate in Professional Communication and Leadership. The Department also houses the First-Year Writing program and an ESL program that offers support for international and multilingual students in their academic pursuit at Georgia Southern University.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Lecturer of Linguistics and ESL will provide teaching (both online and face-to-face classes) and service. The ideal candidate will help strengthen the ESL program and develop the undergraduate interdisciplinary concentration in Applied Linguistics and the online graduate certificate in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, in addition to providing support for other Department programs and activities (which may include First-Year Writing). The position is a ten-month lecturer appointment teaching four courses per term (eight courses per year), and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Summer teaching is available but not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master's (or higher) degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related area, by August 1, 2019
  • At least three years of full-time or equivalent teaching experience in an intensive English or academic English preparation program in a college or university setting where English is the language of instruction
  • Extensive experience in ESL program administration and/or development
  • Experience in English placement test and ESL program assessment
  • Record of on-going professional development
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: sociolinguistics, applied phonology, world Englishes, computer-assisted language learning or language assessment
  • Experience in ESL teacher development
  • Experience teaching English outside of the United States
  • Proficiency in one or more languages other than English
