The Assistant Arts Professor of Sound Design / Head of Sound Design Training is responsible for instructing and mentoring BFA students in the Production and Design Studio. This full-time, non tenure-track position, which holds a multi-year contract with the possibility of renewal upon successful review (held in the penultimate year of the contract), commences on September 1, 2019 and  teaches five courses per year. Courses will include Intermediate and Advanced Sound Design; Stagecraft and Independent Study Seminar with advanced students. Mentorship will include advising students on selecting internships, developing their portfolios, and discussing career goals.

The Assistant Arts Professor will also advise students as they work as assistants and designers on departmental productions. They will assist the Studio Head in determining appropriate production assignments for each student. The Assistant Arts Professor will attend design and production meetings as well as tech and dress rehearsals (as needed and when available) to guide student designers through the production process. They may also facilitate communication between the show director, student designer and the Sound and Media Director or other collaborators. Following each production, the Assistant Arts Professor will provide feedback to the students who have completed production assignments in the sound area. The Assistant Arts Professor may be asked to design a departmental production if availability allows.

In addition, the Assistant Arts Professor will be active in the leadership of the studio and of the Department of Drama through service on committees and participation in faculty meetings. Candidates must have established design careers and are expected to stay active in their profession while teaching - bringing a knowledge and experience of current techniques and practices to the classroom.

The Production and Design Studio is a professional training program in the Drama Department of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The studio trains undergraduate designers, managers and technicians who will graduate with a BFA in Theatre. The mission of Production and Design is to provide students with the skills, techniques and experiences necessary to pursue a career in the design and production areas of the performing arts.   A faculty of 30 (10 full-time) share the opportunity to educate and participate in theater-making with a highly motivated and enthusiastic student body of approximately 60 students.
