Chief of Staff, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost

Purpose: The chief of staff represents the interests and priorities of the executive vice president and provost through effective communication, coordination, and integration of academic initiatives, priorities, and objectives. The chief of staff serves as an advisor to the provost and as a liaison to academic and administrative units across the university on behalf of the provost. The chief of staff serves as a visible leader across campus with the ability to balance and influence multiple competing priorities and individuals.

Essential functions: Provide general oversight of the activities of the provost's office. Exercise independent analysis and judgment in prioritizing situations requiring attention and take steps to ensure strategic and operational priorities progress in a timely fashion. Proactively identify information that has the potential to be impactful and elevate issues to the attention of the provost, along with options for resolution, in a timely manner. Ensure the provost is well prepared for meetings and other internal and external activities in collaboration with the executive assistant to the provost and senior vice provosts. Demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal savvy, as well as emotional intelligence, in order to accurately represent the provost's position to internal and external constituencies. Manage flow of issues, projects, and problems within the office and the provost's portfolio. Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with deans, vice presidents, senior vice provosts, reporting units, Faculty Council, and student governance organizations to ensure strategic planning and academic initiatives are in alignment with the university's instructional and research mission. Work closely with chiefs of staff and deputies in executive offices to advance the priorities of the institution in a coordinated manner. Provide direct oversight of the provost's communications team ensuring a coordinated and well-developed academic communication strategy. Serve as the single point of contact to the Division of Academic Quality and Workforce of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Provide oversight of academic compliance functions within the provost's office. Supervise administrative program coordinator position which coordinates faculty and student teaching awards programs and management of degree program approvals, academic legislation, and curricular changes for undergraduate degree programs. Supervise senior administrative assistant who provides direct support to the provost and executive assistants.
