The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Center has an opening for a full time University Staff (unclassified) Academic Advisor position.

Position Emphasis:

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognizes academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the university. The person in this position will collaborate with a team of academic advisors, faculty, and administrators to support students from entry to graduation. Members of the CLAS Academic Advising Center team share a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; student advocacy; and student success. Strong candidates for this position will be prepared to articulate their passion for supporting diverse college students through a developmental and culturally responsive orientation to academic advising. Additionally, strong candidates will demonstrate their experience working effectively and collaboratively as part of a team to support a high volume of students.

Overview of Position Activities:

Academic Advising

  • Advise a richly diverse caseload of new and continuing CLAS undergraduate degree-seeking students through to graduation.
  • Understand and advocate on behalf of the needs of all student populations including first-generation, first-year, transfer, international, and online students.
  • Communicate timely, consistent, and accurate information about degree requirements including general, CU Denver Core, CLAS, and academic program (i.e., major and minor) graduation requirements.
  • Interpret and communicate information about complex college and university policies and procedures.
  • Document detailed notes from email, appointment, phone, online/virtual, and drop-in advising contact with students.
  • Assess student needs and make relevant referrals to campus resources.
  • Engage in professional development activities to remain current with academic advising best practices.

Prospective and New Student Programs

  • Advise prospective students during CU Denver Explore/Preview, Pre-Collegiate programs, and semi-annual Colorado community college visits.
  • Develop and facilitate in-person academic advising presentations for groups of first-time, first-year students during New Student Orientation.
  • Prepare for and facilitate in-person and online/virtual Transfer Advising Group Sessions for admitted CLAS transfer students.

Retention and Graduation

  • Implement retention and early intervention initiatives for students in academic difficulty, including students on academic probation.
  • Develop and conduct proactive outreach campaigns to advising caseload and specific student populations using advising tools and systems.
  • Collaborate with campus constituents to develop and implement student engagement experiences (e.g., internships and independent studies) that assist students in exploring and preparing for careers or post-baccalaureate education.
  • Monitor students' degree progress and support students' development of academic plans using advising tools and systems.
  • Support returning and readmitted students, including students returning from academic suspension.
  • Complete initial and final graduation checks for fall, spring, and summer graduates.
  • Participate in spring and fall commencement exercises.

Committee and Campus Involvement

  • Represent CLAS Academic Advising on college and university committees.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to designated CLAS academic departments and university student affairs units.
  • Partner with liaisons in CLAS academic departments to communicate major and minor program updates or changes to the CLAS Advising team.
  • Collaborate with the CLAS transfer credit and degree audit team and major advisor(s) to support transfer credit articulation and degree audit functionality.

Advising Systems and Technology

  • Use CU Student Integrated Systems (CU-SIS), uAchieve®, EAB Student Success Collaborative (SSC) Campus, CollegeSource® Systems (i.e., TES and Transferology Lab), and OnBase® to advise students.
  • Use web-based tools (e.g., Prezi®, Zoom®, Skype®, and Qualtrics®) to facilitate academic advising presentations, including online/virtual conferences, and collect information about academic advising programs and services.
  • Use web-based forms to submit student information to appropriate student affairs units.

This position may be responsible for additional relevant activities that support the work and mission of the CLAS Academic Advising Center. Please note: some position activities require evening and weekend commitments.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring range for this position has been established at $41,000 to $51,500 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

Academic Services Professional

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of direct professional higher education experience in an academic advising, student affairs, or student support services role or setting (12 months of paraprofessional experience, in an academic advising, student affairs, or student support services role or setting, including graduate assistantship experience, may be counted as direct professional experience).

Academic Services Senior Professional

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of direct professional higher education experience in an academic advising, student affairs, or student support services role or setting (paraprofessional experience, including graduate assistantship experience, may not be counted as direct professional experience).

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, counseling, education or human services-related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • Direct experience working with undergraduate academic advising, new student, and retention programs including orientation, early alert systems, probation and suspension programs, or other enrollment and retention activities.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience utilizing technology that supports effective academic advising practices.
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating relationships with staff, faculty, and other student and academic affairs partners on a college campus.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating and adhering to complex college and university policies.
