The University Health Network (UHN) Toronto General Hospital (TGH) site and Sinai Health System (SHS), Mount Sinai site are seeking an applicant for a full time active staff appointment as an Academic Intensivist; Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Educator. The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate or Full Professor in the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Anesthesia, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be July 1, 2017 or one which is mutually agreed upon.

The UHN TGH Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) is a 24-bed, level 3 critical care unit providing care to approximately 1000 patients annually. Our patients require advanced ventilation, technological and hemodynamic support to overcome the complex challenges of transplantation, complex medical and surgical conditions, shock syndrome, and multisystem organ failure. The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) is a 23-bed unit that fulfills the needs of patients who have a condition that requires the skill of highly trained health care professionals, and specialized modern technology. As the largest unit of its kind in Canada, and the third largest in North America, we care for 1,500 heart surgery patients, 30 heart transplant patients, and 600 vascular surgery patients each year.

The successful candidate will lead the inter-professional critical care team during clinical weeks on call in the role of attending physician, with weeks both in the MSICU and CVICU at TGH. In addition, s/he will develop an academic profile and body of work in the field critical care education and will serve as the education site lead for the TGH MSICU. The successful candidate must also have strong interpersonal and communication skills and thrive within a collaborative and interdisciplinary program involving multiple specialties (medicine, surgery, radiology, etc.).

The successful candidate must have a medical degree, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in anesthesia (or equivalent) and sub-specialty training in Critical Care Medicine. Additional training in Cardiac Anesthesia and certification in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography are preferred. The successful candidate must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and must have proven clinical skills at a high level, evidence of demonstrated excellence in education and a commitment to teaching students, residents and fellows. Compensation for clinical activities will depend on the amount of clinical work performed and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and within the usual range for an intensivist in the Province of Ontario ($200,000 - $400,000 per annum).
