Occupational Summary

The DCRI achieves its mission of innovative thought leadership in clinical research and translation by advanced data analysis and methods. TDS is at the center of DCRI's data driven analysis through a set of highly aligned and integrated functions consisting of Information Technology (IT), Clinical Data Management (CDM) and Clinical Research Informatics (CRI). This position is responsible for the strategy, innovation and operational excellence of delivery across all three functions. This role must utilize exceptional communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across the various internal DCRI depts., governance committees as well as build productive relationships with the School of Medicine (SOM), Duke Health Technology Services (DHTS) and Office of Information Technology (OIT). The position acts as a trusted advisor to the research faculty and operational heads. This position will serve on the DCRI executive management team as well as the cabinet. This is the highest level IT, CDM and CRI position within the institute and reports to the School of Medicine Chief Academic Information Officer (CAIO) and to the Executive Director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

Work Performed

Personnel Management:
The Executive Director TDS is responsible for approximately 175 FTE's and supervises 5-8 direct reports of the Associate Director and Director level. This leader must transform the TDS organization and create the DCRI workforce of the future. This leader must be able to recruit, mentor, and retain highly skilled technical resources and motivate them to act as a unified team on an ongoing basis. Must have the capability to develop a team that thrives on a performance-based culture. Must be a good listener and an excellent communicator.

Operations Management:
The Senior Director TDS has overall accountability for the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of approx. 100-125 simultaneous projects across IT, CDM and CRI.
This leader must bring an unrelenting commitment to meet project milestones on time, on budget and with a high level of customer satisfaction. The DCRI operates in a FDA regulated industry and is subject to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as well as processes Personal Health Information (PHI) and Sensitive Electronic Information (SEI). This leader is responsible for ensuring compliance will all computer system validation, privacy and security related regulations. This leader must apply modern methodologies such as agile, Lean, Six Sigma and DevOps to drive efficient and competitive operations.

This leader has overall accountability disaster recovery, high availability and system data integrity.
Must be able to represent the organization externally on Technology & Data Solution matters and be comfortable interfacing directly with key commercial customers and federal agencies on project related concerns and potential business development.

Financial Management:
This leader has overall accountability for managing approximately $35M in operating expense and developing long-range technology plans. Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) ensuring solid return-on-investment for operational and capital funds.

Strategy, Innovation & Analytics:
This leader has overall responsibility for developing and deploying strategic plans that transform the TDS people, process and technology. Must be an innovative thinker capable of scanning the technology, data management, informatics and general CRO marketplace, identify opportunities in newer technical offerings and develops solutions that serves as a differentiator for DCRI.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics or Data Science
  • Prefer advanced degree (MS/Phd.) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics, Data Science or Management

Professional Experience:
  • 15 years of related progressive Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics or Data Science experience with 6 years Director level management experience in the contract research, pharmaceutical, medical device, or biotechnology industry or in an academic research organization.

Functional knowledge of structured randomized clinical trials

CRO, pharmaceutical, biotech development, or health care industry required.
Highly effective presentation, documentation, interpersonal, and leadership skills with a team-oriented approach.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
