Primary Function of Organization Unit: The College of Veterinary Medicine's (CVM) Computing Resources is responsible for addressing the diverse IT needs for the CVM as a whole;this includes the Veterinary Hospital, Research areas, and departments, as well as academic classroom support. The current scope includes all faculty, staff, students, researchers, and administrators across the CVM. The Computing Resources Team must ensure the CVM is capable of successfully embracing the latest technologies and tools while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of all IT processes and data.
Essential Job Duties: The Linux Engineer position will be in the CVM Computing Resources group and will directly report to the IT Director for the group. From an IT services perspective, the role is located within the Tier 3 Engineering services area of Computing Resources and the incumbent will receive D2D work priorities and direction from the Lead Engineer. This position will provide primary Linux SysAdmin capabilities to the group (70%), but will also function as a backup Windows SysAdmin (30%) to provide service support redundancy in conjunction with the Lead Engineer. This position will also be expected to collaborate with the Computing Resources application development team to address instrument interfacing needs for the veterinary hospital and research/diagnostic labs. In addition, the Linux Engineer will assist with data automation scripts and support, providing in-depth and non-routine support for the Veterinary Hospital as well as the rest of the CVM.
Department Required Skills: - Strong working knowledge of Linux system administration (preferably Red Hat;RHEL), - Solid working knowledge of Windows administration (Windows Server 2008+), as well as various client workstation systems (Mac OSX, Windows 7-10, Linux, etc.). - Solid understanding of networking concepts (TCP/UDP communication ports, protocols, VLANs, VPNs, etc). - Ability to work as part of a team with strong verbal and written communication skills. - Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: - Bachelor's degree preferred. - Microsoft Active Directory (ADFS) experience. - Familiarity with Macintosh OSX applications and systems a plus. - Red Hat certified system administrator a plus. - Familiarity with OS virtualization (e.g., VMWare) or App virtualization (e.g., Citrix ZenApp) a plus.
