Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent or higher) in Engineering, Operations Management, or other related field. Experience in a Research or University Hospital Environment. Work experience in an academic setting. Project management experience. Construction management experience. Work experience with Systems Controls, HVAC, Refrigeration, Security Systems, Electrical Systems, Mechanical Systems, Waterproofing, Plumbing, Carpentry and/or, Rigging and moving equipment.
Brief Description of Duties: Manage the day to day facility operations of the Life Sciences Complex, working closely with all scientific and technical departments in relation to all regulatory and code compliance requirements; and coordination with University’s EH&S, Custodial, Operations, Design and Construction, Public Safety departments.
The technically sophisticated Life Sciences Complex (LSC) totals 509,839 square feet and includes the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), the Biology Learning Laboratories (BLL), the Life Sciences building (including the Greenhouse), the Bioengineering building and the Life Sciences Library (Laufer and IACS).
The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
- Responsible for overseeing physical maintenance, rehabs, and correction of specific problems in the Life Sciences Complex and make recommendations on new or existing policies and procedures. This task includes responsibility for reporting all defects, failures and malfunctions in utility services and building mechanical systems. Conduct periodic inspections to uncover conditions that require corrective action. Implement procedures to safeguard equipment and experiments in progress and minimize loss of productivity.
- Responsible for building and laboratory security and safety. Must maintain safety standards and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and University policies and procedures and communicate information with building occupants. Conduct routine safety checks and provide assistance in emergency situations during routine and non-routine working hours. Ensure the responsible use and disposal of radioactive materials, hazardous materials and universal waste. Building liaison with campus fire marshals and Radiation safety committee. Responsible for notifying departments and maintaining fire evacuation procedures as part of the fire warden program. Control and document all security systems and procedures related to building access (electronic access and/or key controls).
- Responsible for furnishings, equipment, supplies and utility services required for effective instructional and research programs. Responsible for technical support of programs (i.e. advising researchers as to capability of systems and equipment such as fume hood capacities, electrical power). Collaborate on design and installation of scientific instrumentation and computer systems. Work with the departments and Facilities and Services to coordinate furnishings, equipment and supplies, delivery and set-up in building.
- Monitor overall performance of both in-house and externally contracted maintenance services. Work with Central Services to ensure recycling and promote and maintain the program.
- Liaison to Department of Information Technology and Facilities and Services department for: space modification and alteration necessary to support changes in research/teaching programs; recommendations for facility improvements.
- Supervise in-house fabrication of devices used in laboratories.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
