Early Childhood Specialist (Infant/Toddler), UTC Children’s Center  Requisition # 18000001EE 


This position is the lead teacher in a Toddler classroom working with 3 part-time assistants to ensure coverage in the classroom. The lead teacher responsibilities consist of developing lesson plans, implementing the curriculum for an Infant/Toddler program in accordance with requirements of the Tennessee Department of Human Services, National Association for the Education of Young Children and UTC Children’s Center philosophy and goals while ensuring the welfare, health and safety of children at all times. This position serves as team leader for the infant/toddler team and a point of contact for the Lead Coordinator and Coordinator. This position will provide leadership in curriculum development, implementation and assessment for 32+ infants and toddlers at one Children's Center site and assists at the other site if necessary. When teaching in the classroom of toddlers, this position will be observed by college students and will train these students in linking developmental theory and practice. This position will also serve as a designated person in charge in the absence of the Lead Coordinator and/or Coordinator. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the classroom of toddlers while implementing the lesson plans with the assistants as the college students observe to learn best practice while using the accreditations and regulations the Center must follow; guiding and supervising the assistants and student workers in the classroom.
  • Aiding in other infant/toddler classrooms as needed for guidance, suggestions or support for the teaching staff; conducting student assistant orientation/training, twice yearly.
  • In the absence of the Coordinator, serving as the designated contact person and filling in where needed.


Bachelor’s degree required. Experience teaching with toddlers ages 12 months – 2 years with 1-2 years’ experience is required. Must have knowledge of early childhood education and skills to implement them in a classroom of toddler children. Must have the knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices. Must have the ability to quickly move children to prevent accidents or evacuate. Must have the ability to multi-task in the classroom or other classrooms as needed. Must have the ability to teach college students the reasons for teachings/lessons and development.
