The Office of Community College Research and Leadership (OCCRL) in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership seeks a full-time Visiting Web Developer that will support OCCRL sponsored projects. OCCRL was established in 1989 at the University of Illinois within the College of Education, and the mission of office is to provide research, leadership, and service to P-20 educators who seek to improve college and career readiness and success.

This full-time 12-month, academic professional position is grant-funded and renewal is contingent upon availability of funds. The web developer is a front-end position that will serve as the website coordinator/administrator that works to maintain a cohesive design for OCCRL's website, optimal dissemination of OCCRL products, and increase OCCRL's online presence. This position is responsible for developing content strategies, managing and maintaining online content, designing website templates, coding widgets, and supporting mechanisms to ensure optimal performance of OCCRL's web content.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Update and publish content on OCCRL's website, making sure to always adhere to the Illinois, College of Education and OCCRL site style and theme
  • Develop widgets and other page components to streamline content management and visual consistency across OCCRL pages
  • Collaborate with internal audiences to define and develop creative strategies for web content
  • Approach development with a value for universal design, seeking accessible solutions with designers in early stages of the design of the product
  • Employ current and best practice methods for building websites, supporting standards for content and design
  • Design templates and web structures that create a positive and efficient user experience using well designed, testable, and efficient coding
  • Implement assurances that products meet accessibility requirements for assistive devices while supporting multiple forms of access including keyboard access, screen readers and assistive devices
  • Manage website content as well as author, develop, and edit a consistent stream of fresh, clever, and creative written and visual content that engages and educates internal and external stakeholders
  • Review and edit print and digital communications to maintain consistent, on-brand web messaging that aligns with the strategic positioning of OCCRL
  • Manage website optimization, ensuring that the site is optimized for different browsers, devices, and search engines
  • Work closely with the media coordinator in creating and maintaining multimedia, including photo galleries, slideshows, and videos embedded in Web pages
  • Work with leadership team, project coordinators, and the media coordinator to repurpose content for various media platforms
  • Monitor and analyze website usage statistics (traffic and engagement) and conduct keyword and SEO research, and provide strategic direction for improving engagement and usability of the website and its content
  • Participates in office-wide committees and operations


Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree required (in an area of study such as Computer Science, English, Journalism, Communications, Information sciences, or similar relevant disciplines)

Experience:

Required: Two to five years of experience in managing and/or developing strategies and content for websites; demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and work in a team environment, as well as work independently; experience in usability and user-centered design/research; demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical professionals and understand technical requirements of web technologies; and experience with managing web content through an enterprise web content management platform.

Preferred: Experience in marketing, design or communications, and proficiency in using design software.

Knowledge:

Required: Skilled technical writing and copyediting, good attention to detail, creativity and knowledge of information technology.
