The Department of Pathology has an opening for a full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Histology Supervisor (Health Care Principal Professional) position.

The Histology Supervisor is responsible for the management of operations within the histology section under the supervision of the Surgical Pathology Medical Director. Knowledge of financial management, LEAN laboratory concepts, CAP compliance, quality/risk management programs and conflict resolution methods are required in combination with an exceptional level of technical experience. This position requires knowledge of published standard histology protocols and the ability to validate new methodologies as standards change in the field. The applicant must have expert knowledge of frozen sectioning, tissue processing/embedding, microtomy, routine H&E stain, special staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and in-situ hybridization procedures.
This position will manage equipment maintenance, tracking and ordering supplies, cleaning and organizing of work stations, disposal of biological/chemical waste. This role must adhere to all departmental and regulatory policies and procedures, as well as establish and maintain positive relationships with vendors to negotiate competitive pricing for reagent and equipment purchases. This Histology Supervisor will be responsible for the recruitment of highly qualified histology staff and all subsequent training and ongoing performance evaluation.
This position is directly responsible for the supervision, training, recruitment and mentoring of all Histology staff (3 Senior Histotechnologist, 6 Histologists, 1 Lab Technician).
Examples of Work Performed:
- Manages the day to day operations of the histology laboratories for clinical, research, and esoteric work.
- Directs and supervises the accurate and timely preparation of histology slides.
- Define work priorities, staff schedules, assures coverage for laboratory procedures, provides periodic review and training on new techniques and assesses efficiencies of staff productiveness.
- Formulates and maintains the laboratory quality management procedures.
- Implements and instructs all staff in quality improvement initiatives and procedures.
- Prepares for accreditation and licensing agency inspections.
- Maintains quality of laboratory work complying with University, State, and Federal and accreditation (i.e. CAP) standards.
- Insures that all staff receives required training and certifications as required.
- Identifies areas of risk given regulatory requirements and works towards compliance.
- Supervises and coordinates personnel matters for Histology. Includes position establishment, recruitment, affirmative action, hiring, termination processes and annual staff performance evaluations.
- Facilitates and promotes staff development and training.
- Supervises and/or provides recommendations for unit purchasing activities, including capital purchases, building renovation and space acquisition.
- Works with laboratory personnel to develop, revise and implement new preparatory and staining techniques.
- Updates policy and procedures under the direction of the Medical Director. Benchmarks the work performance of laboratory.
- Troubleshoots problem areas and works to maintain high quality in all facets of the laboratory production.
- Works with pathologists to assure quality and usefulness of preparations for use by other technicians and professional in the laboratory.
- Perform administrative clerical functions related to histology, including quarterly and annual reports.
- Maintain communication with Medical and Administrative Directors Ensure all histology staff have all required laboratory training.
- Provide continuing education for all histology personnel.
- Work the hours needed to maintain lab quality.
- Maintain positive working relationships and lab harmony.
- Trains lab assistants and mentors them into becoming histologists. Coordinates resolution of laboratory issues.
- Complete all UCD required training and compliance courses.
- Makes tissue processing decisions in the course of a power outage or mechanical breakdown of equipment. This position must also make decisions about who and when to call in the event of mechanical malfunction or maintenance.
- Provides direct patient care support and positive actions result in correct and timely information to the attending clinic physician for patient treatment. The Histology lab must run under all regulatory and safety guidelines. If it does not then patient care could be compromised which could result in a misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and/or law suit. If incorrect or improper equipment is purchased then the histology lab may not operate effectively or efficiently. Errors are potentially devastating to the patient as a lost specimen, mix up of specimens, incorrect specimen sampling or any number of other errors may result in inability to provide diagnostic information for patients or an inaccurate diagnosis. In some case this may be life threatening. Injury could also occur to the individual and/or others working in the histology due to negligence of protocol.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring salary for this position is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

- Four (4) years' of experience in Histology and Immunohistochemistry Supervision.
Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis, but not the specific experience.
Special Necessary Qualification: Valid HTL and QIHC ASCP certificates.

- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Biological Sciences or other related field.
- Teaching experience (Histology, Professional training Medical Students, Residents).
Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of all Histologist and Histology Laboratory Assistant duties.
- Ability to make personnel, processing and policy decisions and communicate those decisions effectively to both superiors and employees.
- Ability to make decisions regarding contacting clinicians, pathologists and residents if problems occur which require escalation.
- Ability to make decisions regarding the tissue processing of all specimens, including assessing the quality of slides and stains for pathologist review.
- Ability to troubleshoot tissue processing and tissue staining irregularities.
- Ability to make decisions regarding specimens which were not processed in a timely manner and advise clinicians of issues.
- Ability to make appropriate decisions on what procedures and protocols to use for all specimens received and who to consult when this is not clear.
- Internal/external communications are frequent among coworkers, and various Pathology staff (doctors, residents, clinicians, nurses, transcriptionist, etc.). Specimens are received from internal and external sources, so both types of communication occur often. The purpose is to discuss policies, procedures, problems, upgrades, etc... with internal staff members.
- External communication would occur with referring physicians, vendors and potential clients. The Histology environment is potentially hazardous and precautions must be taken while in the lab. The activity within the room is at a high level with as many as 6-8 individuals working in the same general area simultaneously. Great attention to detail is needed as specimens arrive constantly and cannot be mixed up, misplaced, or un-necessarily delayed.
- Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of routine and advanced histological equipment.
- Ability to effectively negotiate equipment purchases and material contracts.
- Solid computer skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in teaching, communication and working well with others.
