Mills College Biology Department invites applications for an 18 month endowed position as a Distinguished Visiting Professor from January 2019 through May 2020. We seek a Developmental Genetics professor and STEM networker who is committed to breaking barriers for women and underrepresented students. The Chan-Norris Professorship is designed to provide excellent teaching, and to enhance the exposure of our students to careers, networks, and opportunities beyond what is normally housed at Mills. The selected candidate will teach one undergraduate course per semester: Developmental Biology in Spring 2019 and Genetics in Fall 2019. The selected candidate will also coordinate and promote a speaker series that brings prominent STEM professionals from a variety of fields to campus.
From gateway courses, to major declaration, to graduation, to employment opportunities, women, and women of color in particular, remain underrepresented in STEM. STEM programs at Mills College are intentionally inclusive and strengthened by close student-faculty relationships and small class sizes. Our Biology program is designed to increase student persistence with a "high expectations, high support" model. At Mills, students work alongside faculty mentors and role models, learn how scientists are breaking barriers of gender and race, and become change-makers transforming their fields.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences, with a successful record of scholarly achievement and demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities. Applicants will need to demonstrate excellence in teaching in higher education, including experience in active learning and pedagogical innovation as well as a clear commitment to working in and to preparing students for work in urban and multicultural contexts
This is an exempt, part-time position. The compensation includes state-mandated benefits including Social Security, State Disability Insurance, Workers Compensation Insurance, Unemployment Insurance and Sick Days. Employees also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts.
