Postdoctoral Research Associate

Essential Job Duties: Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (https://www.ccee.ncsu.edu/) or in the Fiber and Polymer Science Program at North Carolina State University (https://textiles.ncsu.edu/tecs/). The successful candidate will perform research on an NSF-funded grant to develop tailored, 2-dimensional sorbents for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. The successful candidate will contribute to a multi-disciplinary team of researchers studying PFAS occurrence, remediation, and human exposure. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with engineers, chemists and material scientists. Specific activities by the postdoctoral researcher will include -but not be limited to- the development, characterization, and evaluation of graphene oxide-based sorbents. In addition to research activities, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, proposal writing, and other activities as part of her/his postdoctoral training. The position is anticipated to begin on October 1, 2018, for duration of one year, with possibility of extension to a second year, depending on satisfactory performance.
Department Required Skills: Required qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. in materials/organic chemistry, environmental engineering, environmental science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field, with a focus on tailoring surfaces of carbonaceous materials for selective contaminant removal.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience with materials synthesis and characterization as well as with the evaluation of materials for water treatment will be seen favorably, but is not required. An established record of research productivity is also highly desired.
