Posting Summary:
The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Scientist to work in Dr. Wynn Legon and Dr. Jeff Elias' Neuromodulation Lab on ultrasonic low intensity and high intensity neuromodulation research. The position is initially funded for a period of 2-3 years. Potential projects include testing the safety and efficacy of low and high intensity ultrasound pulsing schemes, application of low intensity ultrasound for neuromodulation of brain excitability in small and large animals as well as transducer design and development for applications in humans.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field, or hold an MSc and have at least two years of experience in acoustics in industry or laboratory. Candidates must have experience in the development of ultrasound testing equipment for cavitation detection, design and fabrication of single and multi-element systems and extensive experience in acoustic modelling. Research will involve system instrumentation, animal experiments and quantitative data analyses.

Preferred skills include excellent written and oral abilities, good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a large collaborative team. Previous experience in Java/Python/MATLAB programming is necessary. Experience with one or more of COMSOL, FOCUS, k-wave, PZFlex, CAD, piezoCAD is necessary. Experience with ultrasound neuromodulation application in any model and/or experience working with animal preparations including stimulation and recording is an asset. Besides performing independent research, candidates will also have the opportunity to supervise trainees and write research proposals, including dissemination of findings at research conferences.
