The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, a world-leading fusion energy research center under contract with the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), invites applications for an Associate Research Physicist (postdoctoral research) position located at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will design, execute and analyze experiments on the DIII-D tokamak aimed at understanding particle fueling and transport in the H-mode pedestal relevant to ITER and future fusion reactors. State of the art diagnostics and integrated modeling will be used to quantify the source of main-plasma and impurity particles in the steep gradient region of fusion plasmas.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development, implementation and analysis of diagnostics to measure the edge particle sources, and use interpretative models to diagnose experiments at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego. The appointment will be based in San Diego at the DIII-D national fusion facility. Responsibilities will be to design, fabricate and install new photosensitive diagnostics on the DIII-D tokamak to determine the neutral deuterium particle source profile near the edge of the confined plasma, and interpreting this and other diagnostics in concert with interpretive plasma modeling codes. Applicants should have a strong background in plasma diagnostics, and must have strong computational and data analysis skills. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment and must be an effective communicator. The successful candidate will be based in San Diego and is expected to travel regularly to the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and to other national and international facilities for joint experiments, workshops and conferences.
The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in plasma physics and possess experience working on plasma experiments. Experience in high temperature plasma diagnostics is important. Strong computational skills are essential. Experience working in a team environment is a plus.
