About the Position

The Academic Advisor will provide moderately complex, consistent and accurate student services support for the JHSSC with limited supervision in a high-volume and fast-paced work environment. Such services include: providing information and advising to current and prospective students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, collaborating with relevant constituents to advocate for student needs, informing and referring students to relevant university services and resources, coordinating student success programs, events and projects of the JHSSC.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

-Provide exceptional advising to students and ensure interactions are maintained at a professional level, responsible for entering advising notes after each advising session.
-Provide moderately complex academic advising for students on their academic plans and pathways to graduation and how to access resources and services to help them address any issues and enhance students likelihood of success.
-Provide information to students concerning Lucas College of Business Undergraduate Programs and degree requirements.
-Advise students individually and in groups on topics such as; preparing and completing the change/declare a business degree criteria, graduation application procedures, graduation date change, general education requirements, developmental studies/remediation, and academic probation, disqualification and reinstatement.
-Investigate and resolve moderately complex student issues using PeopleSoft/Campus Solutions and/or other advising systems. Issues may include online course registration, holds on students records, probationary holds, articulation issues, pre-requisites, etc.
-Develop programming and present at frosh and transfer orientation sessions to welcome new students and provide them with the information to transition successfully into SJSU and LCoB.
-Work with JHSSC and Deans Office to assess and continuously improve our orientation activities and follow up services (e.g. Fall Welcome Days, Frosh Launch Days) to ensure student success and retention.
-Provide coordination and implementation support for events, activities, workshops, special events, individual and group academic advising sessions and educational workshops.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a jobrelated field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A masters degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Masters degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related area.
-Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work environment.
-Experience working with students, staff, faculty and administrators from a diverse background.
-Experience with university and college advising policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:
-Standard office equipment (computers, copiers, phones) and standard office software packages, such as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.) and related computer packages
-University policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation
-Comprehensive knowledge of university resources and student services
-The struggles/issues LCoB students face and current student success practices
-Student administration databases (CMS/PeopleSoft, Banner, etc.) and standard productivity tools
-Basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing students for the purposes of holistic academic advising

-Excellent verbal/written communication, presentation skills, and customer service skills;
-Strong organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
-Strong attention to detail and accuracy with information
-Research, analysis, and reporting skills
-Understanding, interpreting, and communicating policies, procedures, information, ideas and instructions
-Effectively draft and compose correspondence and standard reports

Ability to:
-Recognize and refer students to appropriate student services and resources, and keep good working relationships with the units providing these student services/resources
-Provide high-quality student-centered services in a high volume and fast-paced work environment
-Serve a diverse student population
-Quickly learn and understand complex university regulations/policies and relay information clearly to students, faculty and others in the campus community; quickly learn new online applications and review advisor resources
-Coordinate and assess activities, projects, workshops, etc.
-Participate in and contribute to group meetings, clearly express ideas and recommendations orally
-Coordinate and lead outreach activities and work with teams to develop and present outreach materials
-Coordinate teams of students, faculty, and staff and collaborate with various university units and external partners
