Job description

Coe College seeks a teacher educator to join our K-12 licensure program. Coe’s Education Department has a long and distinguished tradition of preparing highly-qualified elementary and secondary teachers.  We invite applications for this full-time, tenure-track opportunity that will begin August 2019.

We are interested in candidates with elementary teaching experience, a strong commitment to preparing preservice teachers in a liberal arts environment, and an ability to teach in the College’s First Year Experience program.  We actively encourage applications from candidates with expertise in meeting the learning needs of a diverse student body and in working collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams.

The Education Department has a strong commitment to preparing the next generation of teachers, in particular those who come from a group historically underrepresented in the field. This goal reflects Coe’s institutional mission to prepare our students for a lifetime of learning. The College currently serves a large percentage of first-generation students and a growing number of students with diverse sociocultural backgrounds.  

The Education Department works closely with schools in Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities to provide our licensure candidates a wide variety of field experiences.  Schools in this part of Iowa have growing student populations from around the globe.

We are dedicated to matching a candidate’s teaching responsibilities to his/her educational background, instructional strengths, and scholarly interests.  Our preferred candidate will hold an Ed.D. or a Ph.D. in education; ABD will also be considered.  The primary teaching responsibilities of the position will include core courses related to differentiation and meeting the educational needs of diverse learners (e.g. students with special learning needs, gifted and talented students, English language learners, etc.).  Secondary teaching responsibilities may include courses related to learners’ literacy development.  We require a minimum of three years' teaching experience at the elementary level.  Candidates who meet the above criteria and who hold a K-8 reading endorsement/certification will be especially competitive, as will those with college-level teaching experience.  

Coe College faculty actively engage in professional development as it relates to their teaching, scholarship, and service.  They are expected to teach three courses each semester; due to the rigor of the teaching load, Education faculty typically fulfill scholarship expectations during the summer months.  Service to the College and area K-12 schools takes place on an ongoing basis. Applications should provide evidence of ongoing professional development in each of these three areas.


  • ABD or beyond in Education
  • Specialization, or equivalent teaching experience, in differentiating instruction
  • 3+ years elementary teaching experience


  • PhD or EdD in Education
  • K-8 reading endorsement/certification, or equivalent experience teaching reading
  • College teaching experience
