Department Chair and Professor of Child and Family Studies
1) An earned Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent in Child or Human Development, Psychology, Education, or other closely-related fields (e.g. Social Work) from an accredited institution is required at the time of application.
2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
3) A documented record of sustained accomplishments in a program of research, including publications in scholarly journals.
4) Evidence of organizational and leadership experience.
1) Evidence of experience training students or administering programs in one or more of the following professional areas: early child development and Early Childhood Education (ECE), California Teacher Credentialing and waiver programs, Child Life Specialist certification, and/or Certification in Family Life Education.
2) Evidence of experience with instructional leadership and program planning.
3) Documented department chair or other administrative experience.
4) Evidence of successful community partnership development.
The successful candidate will serve at least one term as Department Chair, and will continue to contribute to the department as a tenured faculty member. The Department Chair will support the department’s vision and mission, and will lead the department efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff. The Chair is responsible for assigning all courses offered in the department, supervising and mentoring department staff and faculty, and managing all department business.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The mission of the Department of Child and Family Studies is to prepare individuals to understand the relationship between theory, research and practice and to apply this knowledge to issues in the field of human development and family studies. The department curriculum reflects an interdisciplinary approach to the study of children and families, and the social contexts that influence development. The undergraduate major has two options: Option I, General Option, prepares students to work as administrators in preschools, day care centers or youth agencies or to gain entry into careers with children and families in early education, health, pediatric or community based settings. Option II, a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC)-approved Elementary Subject Matter Teacher Preparation Program, provides students a broad-based education in multiple subjects that provides a waiver of the California Subject Examinations For Teachers: Multiple Subjects (CSET:MS). The department also offers a two-year Master of Arts degree in Child Development, which strengthens professional competence and prepares individuals for various leadership positions in child and family–serving organizations.
