Position Summary: This position is the Project Development Director for the Carolina Population Center. The Carolina Population Center (CPC) promotes and supports complex innovative interdisciplinary research in the population sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill. CPC's 64 Faculty Fellows come from 15 academic departments. In addition, the Center hosts 8 post-docs and 42 pre-doctoral trainees and is home to 132 professional research staff. In fiscal year 2018, the Center was awarded research grants and contracts totaling over $100 million. Approximately 64 externally funded research projects are active at CPC, receiving funds from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Bloomberg Foundation, among others. In order to maintain this impressive research portfolio, the Center must have a strong team of research staff members who keep abreast of cutting edge research in the population sciences, the changing landscape of federal and foundation funding, and the complex regulatory environment in which complex large-scale scientific research endeavors operate. This position will engage in research, strategic planning, and project development in support of the Population Center and its Fellows. The Director of the unit will work with faculty, trainees, and staff to help identify research funding possibilities, develop and submit successful sequences of proposals to support Center- and Fellow-driven research agendas, and initiate start-up work for funded projects. The position will develop a data analytics approach to monitoring portfolio development and project success rates and cultivate relationships with OSR and other relevant campus groups. The position reports to the Deputy Director for Finance and Administrative Services while actively engaging with CPC Director, Deputy Directors and Program Directors, and Principal Investigators.

Education Requirements: A Master's degree in social sciences, public health, business administration, or a related field or a Bachelor's degree and seven years of related experience.

Qualification and Experience: At least five years of research administration experience with strong preference for a University setting. Thorough knowledge of IRB goals, guidelines, and procedures. Thorough understanding of pre and post award guidelines and regulations from a variety of sponsors. Experience developing portfolio development plans for faculty at various stages of their research life cycles. Management/project coordination with the ability to meet deadlines, work on many projects, and adapt to changing workloads as a function of volume of proposal submission is required. Must have strong communication, organizational, management and strategic planning skills. Experience with database tools. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
