About the Unit
The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact launched in 2014 with a fundraising goal of $4.5 billion. In March 2017, that goal was expanded to $5 billion. The campaign is the most ambitious and comprehensive in the University's history. Campaign priorities cover every division, school, department, and institute across the University. Along with its fundraising goal, the campaign has an equally ambitious goal of engaging 125,000 alumni through intellectual, professional, and social activities on campus, around the world, and online. To date, $4.3 billion has been raised and more than 119,000 alumni have connected with the University through volunteering, giving, events, and online interactions. The Foundation and Corporate Relations team (FCR) works across the university – often directly with unit leadership and faculty – to encourage collaboration, develop submissions, and secure funding from major independent foundations. FCR is responsible for the direct solicitation of +/- $40M each year, and for managing the records and processing of $125M university-wide.

Job Information

Job Summary:

This position will be an excellent introduction to institutional fundraising in a university setting. Under the mentorship of the Sr. Associate Director, Foundation and Corporate Relations, the Assistant Director will manage a large portfolio of internal competitions for funding (coordinating our limited opportunity submissions) and a small portfolio of university academic units to increase their institutional funding. This position will also manage the FCR team's internal process of communicating occasional university news to the foundation and corporate communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the University's process for Limited Opportunity Foundation submissions -- approximately 20 annual or biannual submissions to foundations that require the university to conduct an internal competition to select proposals to move forward.
  • Coordinate information and meetings among interested faculty, the Provost's office, internal review panels, and the foundation funders for the purpose of developing Limited Opportunity Submissions.
  • Develop relationships with faculty, administration, and fundraisers at the Booth School of Business, the Law School, and the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation for the purposes of increasing funding from foundations and corporations.
  • Identify foundation and corporate opportunities proactively for assigned academic units; cultivate relationships between the academic units and the relevant foundation and corporate program officers.
  • Distill complex research projects into short summaries for both academic and non-academic audiences; draft non-routine correspondence regularly.
  • Draft and/or edit proposal narratives, assemble proposal packets, and manage submissions for institutional funding.
  • Liaise with Alumni Relations & Development (ARD) Communications to disseminate messaging to institutional audiences on university news.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience or Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher required.


Experience:
  • A minimum of two years of professional work experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience required.
  • Experience with grant writing, communications, or fundraising a strongly preferred.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
  • Demonstrated project management experience preferred.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
