Description


Biomedical engineering is a discipline of growing importance in society and is a vital and growing part not only of the Boston area but also of the whole US territory infrastructure – industry, academics, and hospitals. The field of biomedical engineering has been growing rapidly in the past few years. This expansion is due to many factors, including

  • scientific and technological advances in molecular and cell biology, materials science and the engineering disciplines;
  • the increasing recognition of the role of interdisciplinary strategies to solve complex biomedical problems;
  • the aging of the population leading to increasing healthcare needs and the associated demands and costs.
  • The Biomedical Engineering Department at Tufts University reflects these themes and offers comprehensive education and research opportunities to students, faculty and industry interested in pursuit of this topic.
The Department Manager is responsible for running the day to day operation of a large academic department or group of departments that may include complex operations such as high volume research, clinic or laboratory operations. S/he represents the department, its faculty and programs to the university and external community and speaks on behalf of the Chair. S/he is responsible for all administrative and financial management functions, including budget modeling, forecasting, account reconciliation, and ensuring compliance with spending guidelines on externally funded grants. S/he also oversees information technology, purchasing and building/space needs for the department. This individual compiles and analyzes complex data, writes reports and department publications and maintains web sites. In addition, s/he manages staff members, students, temporary employees and all personnel matters, acts as liaison between department and administrative offices such as Vice Provost, Finance, Human Resources and manages support for student and academic services, curriculum production and scheduling and faculty search and promotion processes.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 5+years of related experience.
  • Position requires proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and excellent communication, time management, organizational and customer service skills.
  • Strong financial management expertise and experience, including experience working with complex financial & data systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred as is the ability to implement new initiative or business practices.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
May require occasional weekend or evening work.
