Financial Aid Specialist, Pre-Certification

  • Provides expertise in the process of financial aid verification as identified by the U.S. Department of Education to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional need based aid.
  • Reviews IRS tax data, verification worksheets and any other requirement documents.
  • Assist staff and students through the verification process, checking for consistency and accuracy, until verification is complete and financial aid is awarded.
  • Use judgment and problem solving skills to assist in reviewing and processing necessary changes.
  • Reports necessary information/changes via Department of Education information systems.
  • Communicates effectively and consistently with appropriate internal department members from financial services, admissions, registrar and student accounts as needed.
  • Represent the department at special events such as high school college nights, orientations, financial aid workshops, financial literacy workshops, etc.
  • Assist with other projects as needed.

  • Skill in researching regulatory information and resolving complex financial aid questions
  • Skill in computing complex mathematical formulas
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows OS, Word and Excel
  • Experience with WGU systems including Banner, SalesForce, and OnBase
  • Experience with ED systems including COD and NSLDS

  • A minimum of two years' experience in Financial Aid, preferred
  • Knowledge of financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements
  • Must be in good standing with the Department of Education; no loans in default
