International Student Advisor-Application Deadline Extended

Job description

The International Student Advisor will provide support for international students on campus by offering visa and immigration advising, assisting with orientation and other programs, and collaborating with other units on campus to offer support and advocacy related to the successful transition of international students to the Miami University community.

Advising:  Approximately 70% of this position consists of the following: Serve as Designated School Official (DSO); advise F-1 students on issues related to maintenance of legal status; assist with SEVIS reporting; process visa documents and other related paperwork; offer counseling related to cultural adaptation and general wellbeing issues.

Student support and programming  Approximately 30% of this position consists of the following:  Assist with the planning and coordination of international student orientation, programs, workshops, and excursion; coordinate support efforts related to international student taxes and health insurance; liaise with other campus units and student organizations to provide training and advocacy related to international student support; promote an institutional culture that celebrates diversity, multicultural, and intercultural learning.
General:  Follow university policies and procedures related to purchasing, accounts payable, personnel, payroll, volunteers, payroll, and participant travel; correspond with students, parents, faculty and staff with diplomacy, discretion and judgment.  This position requires attendance at evening and weekend activities during certain times of the year.

Require: Bachelor’s degree; knowledge of SEVIS and F-1 regulations; experience working with international students; strong intercultural communication skills; evidence of excellent attendance record; federal regulations require that this position be held by a US citizen or US permanent resident.

Desire:  Master’s degree; previous DSO experience; familiarity with Banner; familiarity with Sunapsis; experience with planning orientation or other programs for international students
