Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Victim Advocate offers crisis response and advocacy with students that are victims of relationship abuse and violence, stalking, and sexual assault. The Victim Advocate will assist with campus, medical, and legal advocacy and will work collaboratively with campus partners, local law enforcement, crisis response and advocacy agencies, and other community resources to provide support. Responsibilities include: offering crisis counseling to students that have been impacted by interpersonal violence, offering advocacy services and accompaniment to students needing assistance in the aftermath of incidents of interpersonal violence; participating on UNCW’s Relationship Violence Sexual Assault Response Team for direct service responders to insure best practices are in place; participating on community teams like the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council and Sexual Assault Response Team; offering educational programs about sexual assault, relationship abuse and stalking on campus; and advising campus policies and emerging legal issues in these areas. The Victim Advocate assists with on-call and walk-in crisis response and confidential assistance for students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
N.C. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position:
Must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality and respond to situations with tact, sensitivity and flexibility
Must demonstrate the ability to listen, empathize, provide information, empower victims, and act as a liaison between students and other providers
Must demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with multiple on and off-campus agencies to aid in coordinating effective responses for clients
Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
Must demonstrate the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
Must be able to act independently and be able to balance advocating for multiple clients, responding to crisis and walk-in traffic, and developing and delivering programs for students, faculty and staff
Must demonstrate a strong understanding of best-practices relating to duties of the position and the ability to independently make sound decisions based on best-practices, laws, policies and procedures
Must demonstrate an understanding of grant-based programs and demonstrate the ability to achieve grant objectives
Preferred education, professional skills and experience:
N.C. Victim Advocate certification or equivalent
Experience working with college students or adolescents
Experience working with law enforcement and court settings
Experience in crisis response or advocacy work
Experience with public speaking & program development
Experience working with diverse populations
Recruitment Range: $40,000 - $41,820
NC Salary Grade Equivalency: 67
Hours Per Week: 1.0 (40 hours per week)
Months Per Year: 12 Months
Work Days: Monday - Friday, on call all 7 days
Work Hours: 8:00AM - 5:00PM, on call any hour
