ASSISTANT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

Duties: The Assistant Maintenance Mechanic works in the Physical Facilities department of the Morris Arboretum. In this capacity the incumbent is responsibility for assisting in the operation and maintenance of all aspects of the Physical Facilities department. These include mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing and irrigation systems. Also, as part of the Physical Facilities team, part of the scope of work is to provide assistance and support to the Director of the department and the Maintenance Mechanic.

The main duties of this position are to resolve maintenance and operational issues as they arise in all buildings and other physical facilities responsibilities. If unable to resolve these issue, informing the supervisor and calling the approved vendor to correct the issues. Work independently with minimal supervision. Other responsibilities include preventive maintenance, routine safety inspection and other maintenance concerns. Helping the maintenance mechanic when there are project's that need two people. This position also covers for the maintenance mechanic and service mechanic when on leave. Directing sessional staff on daily operations and basic duties. This position is considered 'essential personnel' and will be required to attend for work when the University suspends normal operations. The position is also expected to be on call during inclement weather and other events.

Qualifications: A High School Diploma or GED and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A certificate from a trade school or 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in the maintaining of buildings and other physical facilities is preferred. Must have knowledge in all aspects of the building trades including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing and HVAC systems. Must have knowledge of safety regulations and OSHA standards. Ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the position which include: frequently lifting more than 25lbs; lifting up to 60 lbs; climbing ladders; moving furniture; shoveling snow; moving supplies. A valid driver's license is required.
