The Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member (60% research, 40% teaching) at the rank of Assistant Professor with an expected start date of August 23, 2019.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences has a vibrant, multidisciplinary faculty dedicated to advancing knowledge through interdisciplinary research, teaching and community service. We are continuing to expand by adding two new tenure-track faculty members in 2019 after adding five new faculty in 2017. With 28 faculty, over 750 undergraduates and 28 graduate students, we actively engage in research in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, behavioral genomics, nutrition, food policy, cancer prevention, and public health. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Allied Health with multiple concentrations, including Public Health and Health Promotion and Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety; three nationally-accredited health programs (Dietetics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diagnostic Genetic Sciences); two masters programs (Health Promotion Sciences, Health Care Genetics); and a PhD program in Health Promotion Sciences. Faculty also receive research and grant support through the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention and Policy (InCHIP), a multidisciplinary research institute with national and international impact on health behaviors at the individual, environmental, social and policy levels.
We invite candidates with expertise in innovative health research methods and analysis of complex data in one or more of the following areas: adaptive and/or just-in-time designs, optimization designs, intensive longitudinal data analyses, social network analyses, artificial intelligence (e.g., natural language processing, machine learning), and/or data mining with health-related data. The successful candidate will have strong expertise in at least one (but not all) of these areas. The candidate should have experience in health-related research and collaborating with researchers from health-related disciplines (e.g., psychology, epidemiology, public health, marketing, nutrition science, kinesiology, genetic sciences, occupational health, biostatistics, medicine). The candidate is expected to develop a strong, independent, extramurally-funded, innovative research program in a health-related area that addresses and complements existing departmental research activities in obesity, HIV/AIDS, digital health, genomics, nutrition, food policy, cancer prevention, and public health. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research and scholarship mission of the University through extramural funding, high-quality publications and national/international recognition. In the area of teaching, the successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction and advising/mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Department's curriculum through teaching of existing courses and/or development of new and innovative courses.
The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and demonstrate leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
- A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, including (but not limited to) biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, computer science or psychology
- A record of health-related research scholarship as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications
- Evidence of successful collaborations with researchers in one or more disciplines external to their own
- Expertise in one or more of the innovative health research methodologies and analytics areas listed above
- Evidence of promise as an independent investigator
- Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity through teaching and research
- A record of health-related research inquiry as evidenced by grant funding and/or submitted grant applications
- Postdoctoral research experience
- Potential for the candidate to have maximal collaborations with departmental faculty as well as faculty in other departments
- Demonstrated potential for supervising graduate and/or undergraduate student research
- Demonstrated potential for teaching undergraduate and graduate methodological/analytic courses
- Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities desired but not required
This is a 9-month, tenure-track position with an expected start date of August 23, 2019, and will support the department's mission to be a national and international leader in health promotion science, education, and research. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
